Filed under: Red Wings, NHL Free Agency, NHL RumorsVeteran center Mike Modano will sign with the Detroit Red Wings later this week, the Detroit Free Press reported Monday night. Sources close to the situation confirmed to the newspaper that they believe Modano will make his decision to join the Wings after spending 20 seasons with the Stars franchise in Minnesota and Dallas.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the contract is a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. He will reportedly center the third line for the Red Wings.
"Big announcement Thursday," Modano texted the paper Monday.
It was either a return home to Detroit or retirement for the 40-year-old Modano, who also talked with the San Jose Sharks and Minnesota Wild this offseason. A return home, however, makes the most sense for Modano, as his parents still live in the area and he has the chance to join a legitimate playoff contender.

He is expected to make his announcement official shortly after.
General manager Ken Holland noted that he was cautiously optimistic about Modano signing with the franchise.
