Hockey Champions League: Good Idea in Theory, but Would it Work?

Filed under: NHL Fans, International HockeyOne of the many topics that surfaced during the World Hockey Summit in Toronto on Monday night was the suggestion for a Champions League format, matching the best teams in the various professional leagues against each other in a winner-take-all tournament.

Such a format currently takes place in European soccer with the UEFA Champions League, which has become one of the most prized championships in sports.

In theory, it's a great idea, and would certainly help to satisfy our unquenchable thirst for as much meaningful hockey as humanly possible. But it also leads to a number of questions, including but not limited to, how do you handle travel, ice size and, of course, playing rules (the NHL and European leagues have different rules, while the European teams play on a larger sheet of ice).

There's also the little issue of competitive balance, and what motivation -- if any -- the NHL would have to take part in such an event. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
