Filed under: Sprint Cup, NASCARLess than 24 hours after Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark expressed hope that his speedway would keep the two NASCAR Sprint Cup dates it has had since it opened 50 years ago, the track announced that it would have only one race in 2011.
The speedway said that its sole Sprint Cup race for 2011 will be on Sunday, Sept. 4, the day before the Monday Labor Day holiday. Although the speedway didn't say, presumably the race will be on Sunday night, as it is this year and was last year, a switch that put more fans into the grandstands.
But the speedway for many years has struggled to attract fans to its traditional March date, in part because of the uncertain weather.
It's this date that now presumably will go to Kentucky Speedway, which has called a press conference for next Tuesday, apparently to announce the date of its inaugural Sprint Cup race. Whether the March date will remain the same has yet to be announced.
Atlanta is not the only facility rumored to be losing a date.
The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that California Speedway, which struggled to fill seats at both of its Sprint Cup events, may lose one for 2011.
Earlier, NASCAR Chairman Brian France promised "some pretty impactful changes" in the 2011 schedule. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentsonline sports games
