WAC to Announce Three New Schools

The Western Athletic Conference could have a new look as early as Thursday.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is reporting that the conference will finalize deals this week with the University of Denver, University of Texas-San Antonio and Texas State to join the WAC beginning the 2012-13 season.

UTSA and Texas State will join in football and other selected sports, giving the conference eight football members, and Denver will join as a non-football partner, bringing the conference total to nine basketball schools.

The three teams would replace Fresno State and Nevada, who are scheduled to leave the WAC on June 30, 2012 and Boise State -- which leaves June 30, 2011.

Last month, WAC commissioner Karl Benson also noted that the conference was looking at the University of Seattle as a non-football member and the University of Montana.

Seattle made a membership pitch to the WAC Membership Committee in Dallas in September. The school could also be a target of the West Coast Conference, which just added BYU as a non-football member and would need another non-football member to give it 10 basketball programs.
