In Week 8 at Detroit, Washington coach Mike Shanahan benched six-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb with 1:50 remaining and the Redskins trailing by just six points, saying that backup Rex Grossman (!) was better equipped to run the two-minute offense. When the Redskins returned from their bye a week ago tonight, they were crushed 59-28 by visiting Philadelphia in part because they failed to convert all 10 of their third downs, falling to last in the NFL in that statistic with 21.6 percent efficiency.
A week later, it's all smiles at Redskins Park after Sunday's 19-16 overtime escape at Tennessee during which McNabb led two-minute drives at the end of each half that produced field goal attempts and Washington converted eight of 16 third downs.
"I guess we don't have to talk about that any more," Shanahan cracked about the two-minute controversy which had lingered since the loss to the lowly Lions. "(Donovan) did a great job at the half at least for the field goal opportunity. He made a couple of sideline (throws) when we didn't have any timeouts. He got a few yards here and there to give us a chance for a 50-yard field goal."
McNabb, who didn't guide Philadelphia to five NFC championship games and a Super Bowl during the previous decade without being competent on two-minute drives, says that quarterbacks thrive in those pressure-packed situations.
