SAN DIEGO -- A wet night in southern California seemed appropriate for the San Diego State football team and its breakthrough season.
Rain seldom drenches San Diego as it did Saturday, and even more rare are the seasons when SDSU is any good at football.
This year has brought a sea change, the Aztecs notching their first winning season since 1998, and if coach Brady Hoke's second SDSU club could finish off wobbly Utah late Saturday in a Mountain West Conference game, it would jump into the AP rankings Sunday for the first time since 1995.
What took place next on the soggy field were events crazy, logical, maddening and uplifting, depending on whether one wore SDSU's red and black or Utah's red and white.
Utah began to play defense, after having allowed 109 points in its previous 11 quarters and 34 on the night. San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley stopped channeling his quarterback coach Brian Sipe, the former SDSU and Cleveland Browns star.
Propelled by two late interceptions of a quarterback who'd gaffed them for 434 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters, Utah pulled out a victory, 38-34, and remained 25th in the AP poll announced Sunday.
