The Philadelphia Flyers signed forward Jeff Carter to an 11-year contract on Saturday worth a reported $5.27 million per season, as reported by TSN's Bob McKenie. Often the subject of trade speculation (rumored deals/proposals for Tomas Kaberle and Tomas Vokoun being some of the bigger ones in recent years), Carter has scored at least 30 goals in each of the past two seasons, including a career-best 46 during the 2008-09 season. He has eight goals and six assists so far this year. The 11th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Carter has spent his entire career with the Flyers and was selected the same year the team also picked its current captain, Mike Richards, in the first round. Richards, of course, is also signed to a long-term deal, locked up through the 2020 season at an average salary of $5.75 million per year. To get Richards and Carter for a combined cap hit of roughly $11 million per year for the next decade, while both players are still in their mid-20's and in the prime of their careers, is an impressive move by the Flyers front office.
Carter would have been a restricted free agent this summer without a new contract extension.
