Even if he had lost the American League Cy Young Award balloting in 2010, Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez came into Thursday's announcement knowing he'd done at least one thing right. He'd moved the barometer of the Cy Young Award away from a winner-takes-all competition to a discussion about the art of pitching and what it means to be the best pitcher in the American League.
Because while winning 13 games is relatively run-of-the-mill stuff, there was nothing ordinary about the 24-year-old Hernandez's game. He wound up leading the league in innings pitched (249 2/3), earned run average (2.27), quality starts (30) and opponents' batting average (.212).
