Such is human nature that the Heat, perhaps looking ahead to their next game against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, put their foot off the pedal despite their urgency and began coasting late, allowing the Raptors to creep back into the game and trail by only four points halfway through the final period until a 12-2 run by the Heat closed it out.
For coach Erik Spoelstra, the victory brought a certain sense of relief to his players while also acknowledging the team still has a long way to go.
"To continue the process of trying to build our habits and get better," said Spoelstra afterward of what this game accomplished. "There were a lot of good things in this game and there are still things we need to improve on."
Led, as usual, by Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, the Heat overcame Chris Bosh's forgettable night in his first game against his old team. With Bosh on the bench for most of the game due to foul trouble, Udonis Haslem earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in his place.
