Boston acquired the left-hander from the Marlins Friday in a straight-up exchange for another lefty, Dustin Richardson, who doesn't have nearly the pedigree Miller does but has been more effective in his limited time in the majors.
Miller qualifies as a project with upside for the Red Sox, who can't reasonably expect much out of him given his track record. After being named the college pitcher of the year for North Carolina in 2006, Miller was the sixth overall pick in the draft that summer. He signed with the Tigers on Aug. 8 and made his major league debut just 22 days later.
He didn't make much of an impact on Detroit's World Series-bound team in eight relief appearances that year, nor in 13 big league starts (with a 5.63 ERA) in 2007. But he still qualified as one of the headliners in the massive trade that brought Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit while Miller and five other young players headed to the Marlins in return.
