Terry Collins and Wally Backman had their callbacks Thursday as the owners' meetings wrapped up in Orlando, Fla. Their competition, Bob Melvin and Chip Hale, did the same the previous day. All met with new general manager Sandy Alderson, his assistants John Ricco, Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi, and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon.
Though Collins and Melvin have experience managing other major league teams, all four qualify as internal candidates in the race to replace the fired Jerry Manuel. Those two are scouts for the Mets, while Hale was Manuel's third base coach and Backman a minor league manager in the organization.
