Giants' Turnovers Infuriating Tom Coughlin After Loss to Eagles

PHILADELPHIA -- The New York Giants came to Lincoln Financial Field Sunday night tied atop the NFC East but only one turnover shy of the league high.

They left the stadium after a 27-17 loss to the Eagles, having lost the division lead to their rivals down I-95 and having surpassed the lousy Carolina Panthers and the Kansas City Chiefs with a league-high 29 giveaways, after turning it over four more times.

"We're very disappointed," said an extremely frustrated Giants coach Tom Coughlin. "The callous disregard for the ball which has been going for probably a year and a half here. No one seems to be able to do anything about it. Again, (it) costs us a football game. ... We've got to somehow, some way stop the turnovers.

"We've got to solve it. We've got to be smarter than we are. And hopefully we can do that."

The final turnover came at the Philadelphia 40 with 2:51 remaining and New York trailing just 24-17 when quarterback Eli Manning dived headfirst instead of sliding having already scrambled for the first down.

"If (Eli) had slid, it would've been interesting to see what would've happened from that point on," Coughlin said. "You've got to slide. ... I mean, competitively he was trying to get as much yardage as he could. And then you could see him start to lunge. I don't think we have said a thing if the ball didn't come out. But it did."

And with that mistake, the Giants had lost a second division game in eight days, this one coming on the heels of a 33-20 home loss to the previously somnolent Dallas Cowboys last Sunday.

"I have to slide," Manning said. "Sometimes you're just going with your momentum ... and it comes to the point where you don't want to slow down or maybe it's too late and you just go down the fastest way you know how to. It has happened to me before ... (but) we already have the first down and I need to go feet first and move the chains."

Manning also threw two interceptions for a ghastly total of 15 this year.

"If we want to go anywhere, we have to fix it," Manning said of the continuing miscues. "I have to stop the turnovers. The interceptions are obviously a problem. They're adding up. ... Some are just good plays by the defense. I don't feel like I'm forcing (the ball) into crowds or making arrogant throws."

Running back Ahmad Bradshaw continued to match his quarterback in tarnishing a fine season with turnovers. Bradshaw's fumble was his sixth. No other non-quarterback came into Week 11 with more than five. He had another apparent fumble reversed by replay showing his arm had been down before the ball popped loose.

"You've got to be able to hang onto the football," Coughlin said. "(Ahmad) has played very well for us and we'll continue to work at this. ... We made very terrible errors that cost us a chance to win the game, but there was no denying the effort."
