Michael Clayton will be the first player to test the waters, better known as the UFL to NFL transfer fee, as he will be given a workout by the New York Giants, according to a league source who spoke with profootballtalk.com Monday night.Clayton, the 15th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft, was acquired by the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks on Oct. 25. Back then, Clayton was excited about getting the opportunity to stay in shape and impress NFL scouts.
"To have the opportunity to show teams in the NFL my dedication to the game, to get ready and get in football shape, because you can't get into that kind of shape just running myself," Clayton told FanHouse at that time. "To be able to be acclimated with a team, to get in shape, was key for me for numerous reasons."
After being signed to a $26 million contract by the Tampa Bay Bucs, Clayton had an impressive rookie season in the NFL. He caught 80 passes for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns. But injuries slowed him down, and he caught a career-low 16 passes for 230 yards and one touchdown last season. He was among the final players cut by the Bucs before this season.
