Aside from Ichiro Suzuki, position players from Japan haven't had much success making the transition to Major League Baseball, but another star is poised to make an attempt. Tsuyoshi Nishioka, an infielder who won the Pacific League batting title this season, will be posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines this week, according to an ESPN.com report. According to the Japan Times, Nishioka has not yet made a formal request to be posted -- essentially, having the rights to negotiate with him sold to a major league team -- but is expected to do so Wednesday.
Nishioka, 26, hit .346 this season as he racked up 206 hits, the most for a Pacific League player since Ichiro in 1994. His former manager in Japan, Bobby Valentine, indicated to ESPN that Nishioka might end up as a second baseman in the majors, though he believes the switch-hitter could stay at shortstop.
