Brodie Croyle Recovers, Prepares for Reps Against Packers

Filed under: Chiefs, AFC WestChiefs backup quarterback Brodie Croyle, feeling healthy again after missing much of the last two weeks with an arm injury, says he's looking forward to getting as many repetitions as possible in Thursday night's preseason finale against Green Bay.

"It's always fun to get out there and play," Croyle said in a video posting by The Kansas City Star. "I definitely need to go out there and play a lot and ... I anticipate playing a lot. Being a backup, you've got to be ready to go at any point in time, but this is really where we get most of our reps."

Croyle threw for the first time since hurting his arm on Monday, taking part in team drills, and coach Todd Haley welcomed his return as the backup to Matt Cassel.

"It was good to see him out there," Haley told The Star. "He's one of the guys that has to get better to help us become a good team. To see him out there and get through, with no issues, I thought it was a good sign." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Knowshon Moreno's Hamstring Good for Return to Practice

Filed under: Broncos, AFC WestENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Running back Knowshon Moreno rejoined the Denver Broncos on Tuesday for practice, the first time he's worked out with the team since straining his hamstring a month ago.

It's still uncertain whether Moreno, the No. 1 tailback on the Broncos' depth chart, will play in Thursday's preseason finale at Minnesota. But his return gives the Broncos a relatively healthy backfield ahead of their Sept. 12 regular season opener at Jacksonville.

Moreno, after participating in the team's walkthrough, told reporters he still had a ways to go to regain all of his stamina and grow used to being hit and banged around. He described himself as "80-some percent" healed.

"It's good to get back out here and get back into the flow of things," Moreno said. He added that in his absence the Broncos have "looked good. And I want to get back out there and help them." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Erica Blasberg Death Ruled a Suicide

Filed under: LPGAThe death of LPGA golfer Erica Blasberg has been ruled a suicide, Henderson Police announced on Tuesday.

Despite the determination, police arrested Dr. Thomas Hess for obstruction of justice. He allegedly removed items from the crime scene before police arrived to find Blasberg's body at her home in suburban Las Vegas on May 9.

"While asphyxia was the primary cause of death, the presence of prescription drugs in Ms. Blasberg's system was a significant factor," County Coroner Michael Murphy said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with her family as they move through this tragedy."

Hess admitted to police that he had removed Blasberg's suicide note and then stopped cooperating with police, complicating the investigation.

Patrick Mills Leads Australia Over Germany in Rout at FIBA Worlds

Filed under: FIBA, FIBA World ChampionshipIn a very tight Group A race at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey, Australia won their biggest game of the tournament on Monday in Kayseri. They almost guaranteed avoidance of the dreaded fourth spot in the group with a convincing 78-43 victory over Germany.

Australia was led by former St. Mary's (Calif.) standout point guard Patrick Mills. Mills, who played for the Portland Trail Blazers last season, led all players with 16 points and seven assists. He was by far the most dominating player on the court Monday.

The Germans, who played well over the weekend, found no rhythm against Australia, shooting just 25.9 percent for the game. The Australian team did a solid job of clogging passing lanes on defense. German star Demond Greene was 0-of-5 from the field and was held scoreless. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Raffi Torres Signs With Canucks

Filed under: Canucks, NHL Free AgencyJust because it's late August doesn't mean you still can't find decent players on the free agent market, and the Vancouver Canucks proved that Tuesday night by signing free agent forward Raffi Torres to a reported one-year, $1 million deal.

The deal pushes Vancouver about $3.6 million over the league's salary cap, via CapGeek (they can be as much as 10 percent over until the start of the season), and probably removes them as a contender to sign defenseman Willie Mitchell, who they had been rumored to be interested in bringing back.

Torres spent last season with Columbus and Buffalo, and was acquired by the Sabres in a deadline deal, where he proved to be a disappointment, scoring zero goals in 18 games (playoffs and regular season) before becoming a healthy scratch in the postseason. He tallied 19 goals with Columbus, and has proven that he has the ability to score between 15 and 20 goals throughout his career, which should add to the offensive firepower -- and physical presence -- in Vancouver. The Canucks were already the second-highest scoring team in the league last season. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Dolphins Cut Injured TE Joey Haynos

Filed under: Dolphins, NFL Injuries, NFL Training CampDAVIE, Fla. -- From the moment he went to the turf on the first series of the fourth quarter Friday night against the Atlanta Falcons, things didn't look good for Miami Dolphins tight end Joey Haynos. He was helped up and carried off the field onto a waiting cart, unable to put any weight at all on his right leg. He was later diagnosed with a foot injury.

Monday, the 6-foot-8, 270-pound Haynos was waived/injured by the Dolphins. That leaves just three healthy tight ends on Miami's roster -- veterans Anthony Fasano and David Martin and second-year player John Nalbone.

Haynos caught 21 passes for 184 yards and thee touchdowns in just less than two seasons with the Dolphins and started eight games last year, catching 19 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He was also developing into a solid blocking tight end in both the running and passing game, but Dolphins coach Tony Sparano is not automatically going to keep three tight ends on the roster Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Team USA Holds Off Pesky Brazil

Filed under: FIBA, USA Basketball, FIBA World ChampionshipISTANBUL -- As Brazil's Leandro Barbosa walked by after Monday's game, Team USA's Chauncey Billups patted him on the back and said, "See you next week.''

After getting a scare in their first test in the World Championship, the Americans wouldn't be surprised if they run into Brazil in the medal round.

"I think so. I really do,'' Billups said of anticipating Brazil will get another crack at Team USA, which escaped with a narrow 70-68 victory at Abdi Ipekci Arena.

The Brazilians certainly hope that will be the case. And they feel confident they can beat the Americans after nearly doing so without Cleveland Cavaliers big man Anderson Varejao, who sat out Monday with a sprained left ankle.

Even Kevin Durant's 27 points and 10 rebounds weren't enough to keep the Americans from heavily perspiring down the stretch. With 3.5 seconds left and Team USA up, 70-68, Durant fouled Marcelo Huertas, who stepped to the free-throw line with a chance to force overtime.

World's Greatest Free-Throw Shooter Reaches Out to Shaq, Dwight, LeBron

Filed under: Cavaliers, Heat, Magic, NBA FansJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ted St. Martin has spent life with a basketball in his hands, flipping it through the rim with an unprecedented and unbelievable accuracy, a consistency that no one ever has matched.

He just might be the greatest pure shooter in basketball history, the greatest untapped resource the NBA has ignored, hidden away now but still ripe to be mined, a little known key that could open the door to a championship season.

To Shaquille O'Neal, Dwight Howard, or even LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, he could be the ticket to an NBA title in 2011.

"I could make any one of them a 90 percent free-throw shooter, if they had a little time and a willingness to learn,'' he says matter-of-factly. "I guarantee it. Then, how much better would they be?''

St. Martin, 75, is living now in virtual anonymity, still giving shooting lessons, mostly local kids, on his modest, backyard court, a no-frills setup where he has lived and taught for the last 35 years, a middle-class lifestyle that belies his place in history.

He has been the World Record Holder (according to Guinness World Records) for consecutive free throws made without a miss since 1972, officially resetting his own record 15 times. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Thrashers, Predators Take Different Risks With Bryan Little, Patric Hornqvist

Filed under: Predators, Thrashers, NHL EconomicsAtlanta's Bryan Little and Nashville's Patric Hornqvist signed very similar contracts over the past two days, and while the numbers aren't that far off, the two teams are taking two very different risks with their promising young players.

Little, a first-round pick by the Thrashers in 2006 (No. 12 overall), signed a three-year, $7.14 million contract on Monday that carries an annual cap hit of just under $2.4 million. The 22-year-old had a breakout season in 2008-09, scoring 31 goals, good enough for second-best on the team. Instead of building on that promising campaign, his goal production plummeted this past season, as he potted just 13 in 79 games for the Thrashers.

The risk: will Little bounce back from a disappointing season and return to the 30-goal potential he flashed two years ago, or will he be closer to the 13-goal player he was this past season? It's worth asking why he saw such a drop from one season to the next. To help with that, here's a breakdown of where -- and when -- he scored from each season. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Tiger Woods' Barclays Hopes Gone After Triple Bogey

Filed under: PGA, FedEx CupPARAMUS, N.J. (AP) -- One swing cost Tiger Woods any chance of winning The Barclays.

Now he can only hope get gets to keep playing after Sunday.

Four shots out of the lead to start the third round, Woods hit a shocking 3-wood off the first tee-part pop-up, part duck-hook-that sailed over the trees and off the property at Ridgewood Country Club. It led to a triple bogey, and he never got those three shots back.

Woods finished with back-to-back birdies for a 1-over 72 that put him well behind the leaders.

"In the end, it probably cost me a chance to win the tournament," said Woods, who rallied to get to 3-under 210. "But I'm pleased how I sucked it up and got it back the rest of the day, when it easily could have gone the other way. Hitting a ball like that, it can derail you. And it didn't. I got it right back."

It was hard to believe the swing came from someone who had only missed two fairways over the first 36 holes. Woods attributed it to having too many swing thoughts swirling between the ears.

Vikings Consider Using Starters in Preseason Finale Thursday

Filed under: Vikings, NFC NorthWeek 3 of the NFL preseason is thought by most to be the most significant week of football you will find in August. Teams typically play their starters into the second half, giving fans a chance to see the first-team offense and defense at full-speed.

Teams will game plan some, and they'll try to make adjustments off what the opponent is doing. When things go well, it's seen as a sign of things to come when the games count. When they go poorly, well, it's still the preseason.

For the Minnesota Vikings, things didn't go poorly Saturday night against Seattle, but they didn't go all that well, either. The first-team offense sputtered a bit, with the line struggling to protect quarterback Brett Favre, and the veteran struggling to protect the football. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

European Ryder Cup 2010 Roster Announced

Filed under: Ryder CupGLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) -- Edoardo Molinari of Italy came up a big winner twice on Sunday -- first winning the Johnnie Walker Championship, then becoming one of three captain's picks for Europe's Ryder Cup team.

Colin Montgomerie also chose three-time major winner Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald, who is No. 10 in the world ranking.

In one of the toughest choices for any European captain, Montgomerie had three picks for five worthy candidates. He had to leave off Paul Casey, who is No. 9 in the world and played on the last three teams, and Justin Rose, who won twice on the PGA Tour this summer at the Memorial and the AT&T National.

Montgomerie suggested that he had made up his mind about Molinari before he birdied the last three holes to win at Gleneagles.

"It made our job easier that he did win," Montgomerie said. "What he achieved in three rounds was enough to tell us that this player was capable of handling the most incredible pressure so well." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Clarke MacArthur Signs With Toronto

Filed under: Maple Leafs, Sabres, Thrashers, NHL Free AgencyOne of the most surprising arbitration results this summer was the $2.4 million Clarke MacArthur was awarded in his hearing with the Atlanta Thrashers. The team ultimately decided to walk away from the ruling, allowing the 25-year-old winger to become an unrestricted free agent. On Saturday, he inked a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs, worth a reported $1.1 million according to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos.

With Paul Kariya sitting out the 2010-11 season due to post-concussion syndrome, the only remaining free agents that scored more goals than MacArthur's 16 last season were Lee Stempniak (28) and Bill Guerin (21). Veteran Owen Nolan also scored 16.

All things considered (like the remaining free agent market), it's a pretty decent signing for the Leafs and at a solid price (at least when compared to the $2.4 million he was awarded in arbitration). Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

MASN Broadcaster Rob Dibble to Miss Nationals' Upcoming Road Trip

by FanHouse StaffFiled under: Nationals, MLB Media Watch, Sports Business and MediaRob Dibble's absence from the Nationals' broadcasting booth will extend through the team's upcoming six-game road trip, according to MLB.com.

Dibble, Mid-Atlantic Sports Network's regular color commentator on Nationals broadcasts, asked for a few days off earlier in the week after he was sharply critical of Stephen Strasburg on his Sirius XM Radio show when the young pitcher came out of a start last weekend with an injury.

"So for me, a little bit has to be put back on Strasburg here," Dibble said then. "OK, you throw a pitch, it bothers your arm, and you immediately call out the manager and the trainer? Suck it up, kid. This is your profession. You chose to be a baseball player. You can't have the cavalry come in and save your butt every time you feel a little stiff shoulder, sore elbow. ... Video: Assorted Paul Kariya Highlights

Filed under: Avalanche, Blues, Ducks, Predators, SharksEven though he's no longer the player he once was, the news that Paul Kariya will be sitting out the 2010-11 season is still a disappointment, and the question at least has to be asked as to whether or not he'll play in the NHL again.

So far, he's been a point-per-game player for his career, and managed to record some impressive numbers during what was one of the worst eras for offense in the history of the league. He's a 50-goal scorer (1995-96) and has twice recorded 100 points ('95-96 and 1998-99).

Below is a collection of various highlights from his career through the 2009-10 season. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Turkey Rolls Out the Red Carpet

Filed under: FIBA, USA Basketball, FIBA World ChampionshipISTANBUL -- It's my first full day in Istanbul and I have made a friend.

I think.

Mehmet Vorndan shows of one of his carpets

"Rather than sell a carpet, the most important thing is friendship," carpet salesman Mehmet Vorndan tells me. "Friendship lasts forever."

Presumably, longer than a carpet. But since I left his Yurdan Carpet & Jewelry shop without buying a carpet, I will have to check back at a later time to see if my friendship with Vorndan is still intact.

Any visitor to Istanbul soon learns that evading carpet sellers takes similar skills to Team USA guard Derrick Rose driving to the basket. They invite you into their shops and serve you apple tea and say how you cannot leave the city without a fine Turkish carpet. Ask somebody for directions in town and the conversation invariably ends with, "Would you like to buy a carpet?" Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Aric Almirola Gets Fresh Start With JR Motorsports

Filed under: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Nationwide Series, NASCARA driver who has bounced around all three of NASCAR's top divisions may have finally latched on to a consistent ride for next season.

JR Motorsports -- owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- announced Wednesday that Aric Almirola will be their full-time Nationwide Series driver in 2011, with the opportunity to make a few starts in the No. 88 at the end of this season.

"We raced at ORP together a month ago and had a really good run," Almirola said in a team news release after being announced to the JR Motorsports shop. "There is no reason why we cannot compete like that every race, and there is no reason why we shouldn't be running for a championship. I would expect nothing less."

No sponsor has been announced for the team for next season -- an issue that caused this season's original full-time No. 88 driver to leave the team. Kelly Bires signed with JRM for the season only to be released from the team after the sixth race at Phoenix. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Tiger Woods Plays Best Round of Year to Share Barclays Lead

Filed under: PGA, FedEx CupPARAMUS, N.J. (AP) -- Yes, that really was Tiger Woods' name atop the leaderboard.

In his first tournament since his divorce, Woods finally looked like the No. 1 player in the world Thursday at the Barclays when he opened with a 6-under 65, his lowest score of the year, to share the lead with Vaughn Taylor. It was his first time leading after any round on the PGA Tour since the Tour Championship last September.

"It's exciting to hit the ball flush again," Woods said. "It's something I've been missing all year."

He didn't miss much at Ridgewood Country Club. Woods hit all but one fairway and putted for birdie on all but two holes. And while he hit his driver only twice, they were two of his best shots of the day -- including on the 291-yard fifth hole, where his drive landed pin-high and settled 15 feet away.

Was it just a coincidence that his game showed up so soon after his marriage was dissolved?

"I can't really say that's the case," he said. "As far as golf, it was nice to put it together."

More: The Barclays Leaderboard | Photos

Woods and Taylor both played in the morning, when the greens were smooth and the conditions were only breezy. They had a one-shot lead over Adam Scott, Brian Gay and Ryan Palmer. Scott played in the afternoon, where a gust of wind played tricks on him at the final hole and led to bogey.

Scott endured a long day in the pro-am Wednesday and didn't think Ridgewood would serve up a 65 to anyone. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

One Ranger Patrolled 50-Mile Off-Road Course Where Eight Died

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A federal agency said Wednesday it had just one ranger patrolling a 50-mile off-road race where a competing truck killed eight spectators gathered close to the Mojave Desert course.

The Bureau of Land Management said the ranger was patrolling the course in the Johnson Valley off-highway vehicle area on Aug. 14 when a spectator flagged him down and reported the truck had slammed into the crowd and overturned.

"The ranger immediately responded, and once at the scene, quickly assessed the situation, and called for emergency support," said Jan Bedrosian, BLM deputy state director of external affairs, said in a statement.

The BLM, which issued permits for the California 200 race, has maintained that the event's organizer was responsible for spectator safety.

The tragedy has raised questions about the agency's oversight of such events.

"It's clear that the law enforcement presence was inadequate the night those people were tragically killed," said Daniel Patterson, Southwest director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. "Those deaths were preventable. Better decisions from the BLM could have helped keep those people alive."

The BLM's field office in Barstow, which oversees the Johnson Valley, has 10 rangers on staff to patrol approximately 300,000 acres of land that are open to off-road vehicles, according to documents filed by the BLM.

In an effort to step up enforcement following the crash, the BLM had eight employees, including three rangers, staff a motorcycle race in the same area last weekend.

Overhauled ESPNEWS to Debut Monday

by Milton KentFiled under: Sports Business and MediaCome Monday, ESPN will unveil an overhaul of its all-sports news channel, ESPNEWS, with two new shows as well as the addition of two blocks of "SportsCenter."

The Worldwide Leader announced that it will premiere "The Beat," a half-hour show hosted by Bram Weinstein, airing each weeknight at 6 p.m. ET and re-airing at 6:30 p.m. As described in a release, the show, whose title is designed to play off both the concept of a reporter's beat and a heartbeat -- "the pulse of sports" -- will feature stories, highlights and interviews as well as standing segments, all with the word "beat" in them.

The channel will also unveil "Highlight Express," a half-hour show of highlights and sound bites that will air essentially throughout the day when "SportsCenter" and "The Beat" don't air and frankly sounds a lot like the current ESPNEWS format. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Team USA Notebook: Center No Big Deal for Versatile Lamar Odom

Filed under: Lakers, FIBA, USA Basketball, FIBA World ChampionshipISTANBUL -- Not that he's a candidate yet to replace Phil Jackson, but Lamar Odom let it be known Friday what he hopes one day to do.

"That's why I'll be a great coach,'' said the Lakers and Team USA stalwart about what his versatility will mean when his playing days are over.

Odom, you see, has played every position on the basketball court, a claim not many can make. So perhaps it's no surprise Odom, who is mostly a power forward during his day job with the Lakers, has emerged as the starting center for the Americans, who open the FIBA World Championship here Saturday against Croatia.

"In high school,'' Odom, 30, said of his tenure at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, Conn., being the last time he was a starting center. "A lot of us were the tallest man on the court at some point (in life and played center). But it makes no difference, center or power forward. I'm a basketball player. Wherever you put me, I fit in.''

The 6-foot-10 Odom has played shooting guard and small forward before. He said he's even had stints in his career as one of the world's tallest point guards, a tribute to his agility. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Snedeker, Atwal Share Lead at Wyndham

Filed under: PGAGREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Brandt Snedeker feels right at home in central North Carolina, no matter which course he plays.

Snedeker shot a 65 Friday and shared the lead with Arjun Atwal at 12-under 128 after two rounds of the Wyndham Championship.

Snedeker had an eagle and three birdies to move into familiar territory atop the leaderboard of golf's final pre-playoff event. He won this tournament in 2007 and shared the lead after a rainy first day last year.

He again has company in the lead: Atwal, who lost his tour card last month and is bidding to become the first Monday qualifier to win an ensuing tournament in 24 years. He followed his tournament-record-tying first round with a 67.

Since the Wyndham returned to the par-70 Sedgefield Country Club in 2008, both winners -- Carl Pettersson in 2008 and Ryan Moore last year -- either held or shared the lead after two rounds.

Colorado May Put Off Exit From Big 12 To Pac-10 Until 2012-13

Filed under: Colorado, Big 12, Pac 10It appears the Big 12 may have to wait a year longer than expected to become a 10-member conference.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, negotiations have broken down between Colorado and the Big 12 on the departing school's departure penalty. Colorado and Nebraska both announced in June they were leaving the conference with the Buffaloes heading to the Pac-10 and the Cornhuskers to the Big Ten.

Nebraska has always maintained it would leave the conference following the 2010-2011 season, while initially Colorado said it would remain and honor the two-year notice requirement in the conference bylaws. But there has been a belief the Big 12 would like to see Colorado leave after this year with Nebraska so that the reconfigured conference could move forward.

That idea, however, has hit a snag because the Big 12 and Colorado can't agree on a figure. According to Big 12 bylaws, any school departing the conference with two years notice must forfeit 50 percent of its conference take for the two years. A school wishing to give one year's notice must forfeit 80 percent of its share. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jimmie Johnson Wins Bristol Pole

Filed under: Carl Edwards, David Reutimann, Joe Nemechek, Chevrolet, Bristol Motor Speedway, Sprint Cup, Joey Logano, NASCARBRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) -- Jimmie Johnson has won the pole for Saturday night's race at Bristol Motor Speedway, where he will attempt Saturday to duplicate his win in March.

The four-time defending NASCAR champion turned a lap at 123.475 mph in Friday's qualifying to put his Chevrolet on the front row. It was Johnson's first pole of the 2010 season.

"Everybody wants to win here," the Chevrolet driver said. "We all know how hard I fought this track myself, my own demons, whatever it is that we finally got over in the spring to win here. I would love to go out and win again. If not, just have a really solid race."

Johnson bettered Carl Edwards, who earned the second starting spot in a Ford. His hold on the pole was for just a few minutes-Johnson ran his lap two cars after Edwards' attempt.

"I was on it for 15.54 seconds or however long it took Jimmie to run that thing," Edwards said. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hockey Champions League: Good Idea in Theory, but Would it Work?

Filed under: NHL Fans, International HockeyOne of the many topics that surfaced during the World Hockey Summit in Toronto on Monday night was the suggestion for a Champions League format, matching the best teams in the various professional leagues against each other in a winner-take-all tournament.

Such a format currently takes place in European soccer with the UEFA Champions League, which has become one of the most prized championships in sports.

In theory, it's a great idea, and would certainly help to satisfy our unquenchable thirst for as much meaningful hockey as humanly possible. But it also leads to a number of questions, including but not limited to, how do you handle travel, ice size and, of course, playing rules (the NHL and European leagues have different rules, while the European teams play on a larger sheet of ice).

There's also the little issue of competitive balance, and what motivation -- if any -- the NHL would have to take part in such an event. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Video: TSN's Top 10 Goalie Moments Contains Fights, Saves and Meltdowns

Filed under: NHL Fans, NHL VideosHere's something to pass some time on a Monday morning.

The top 10 on TSN's "Sportscentre" Sunday evening was counting down the top 10 goalie moments, and it includes a fantastic compilation of fights, goals, blunders and ridiculous saves. As always, any list or countdown is going to be subjective and open to plenty of debate, especially one as arbitrary as "goalie moments." Still, any video that includes Patrick Roy fighting, Ron Hextall scoring goals and Tuukka Rask throwing empty milk crates is definitely enjoyable. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Police Re-Open Case Involving J.R. Smith

Filed under: Nuggets, NBA Police Blotter, FanHouse ExclusiveDenver Nuggets shooting guard J.R. Smith isn't in the clear just yet.

One day after the Denver police told FanHouse that the district attorney would not pursue charges after his altercation with a non-NBA player at the team's practice facility on Aug. 13, Detective John White said Thursday afternoon that the case has been re-opened.

"We have new evidence that requires us to now re-examine the case, which is not all that unusual to do that," White said by phone. "That is the case. It is now an open investigation."

Smith's Denver-based attorney, the well-known David Lane, confirmed a ShamSports.com tweet that the player who claims he was attacked and who initially called the police is Damien Lolar (pictured above). The 26-year-old guard played at West Texas A&M and later for the now-defunct Colorado 14ers.

A Nuggets official said the team will decline comment until the matter is resolved.

Jets Secondary Short on Real Tests After Donovan McNabb's Decision to Sit

Filed under: Jets, AFC EastThere is a spotlight and a microscope fixed on the New York Jets secondary like never before as everyone wants to know how they would perform without Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis in uniform.

The answer wasn't very appealing in the first preseason game at the New Meadowlands against the New York Giants as unheralded rookie wide receiver Victor Cruz caught three touchdown passes -- all of them after Giants starting quarterback Eli Manning was out of the game.

Dwight Lowery has been lining up where Revis normally is and was hoping to be able to test himself more against starting caliber quarterbacks, but as Kevin Armstrong of the Daily News wrote in today's edition, circumstances have not allowed that to happen.

Of course, Lowery did not want to slight any of the other quarterbacks around the league.

"If the QB has an NFL uniform, he can play," Lowery said.

Against the Carolina Panthers last week, the Jets only saw starter Matt Moore for three series, and now tonight they will not see Donovan McNabb at all when they play the Washington Redskins because he has a sprained ankle.

Rookie cornerback Kyle Wilson has impressed the veterans in Revis' absence and is taking a glass-half-full approach rather than worrying about not facing the first-team quarterbacks and receivers.

"We're going against accurate passers in practice and seeing different looks all the while," Wilson said. "I can't get caught up in looking past Washington, though." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Padres Players Balk at Plan to Play Soccer Friendly at Petco Park

by Andrew JohnsonFiled under: Padres, MLB Biz, Sports Business and MediaThe San Diego Padres and Major League Soccer club Chivas USA announced plans for an exhibition soccer match to be played at Petco Park in September, news that comes as an unpleasant surprise to Padres players.

"Asinine," said closer Heath Bell, when asked for his reaction to the plans by the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Let's see, they held a concert during Comic-Con (in late July) and killed the grass in left. OK, so let's go to a soccer match.

"We're in a pennant race. Much of the nation will probably be seeing us for the first time. Shouldn't we be trying to put our best foot forward.

"They're not worried about the field looking good. They're just trying to make a profit. Very interesting. Honestly, I'm all for doing it if it doesn't damage the field. Pittsburgh had a concert after one of our games there and the field was great the next day.

"They had a concert at Petco Park and had to re-sod left field. I'm just glad that we do have a great ground crew. We have one of the most beautiful infields and outfields in baseball. Why now?" Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bubba Watson Wins Ryder Cup Spot; Tiger Woods Still Up in Air

Filed under: Ryder CupSHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- The disappointment of his playoff loss in the PGA Championship didn't last long for Bubba Watson on Sunday.

He's taking his booming drives to the Ryder Cup.

The question now is whether he will have Tiger Woods as one of his teammates.

Watson, who was 18th in the U.S. standings going into the final qualifying tournament, moved up to No. 3 with his runner-up finish at Whistling Straits to be one of eight Americans qualifying for the team.

"I made the Ryder Cup. So that's all I care about," Watson said.

Dustin Johnson, whose two-stroke penalty on a bizarre bunker ruling knocked him out of the playoff, tied for fifth and also secured a spot on the team.

Phil Mickelson led the standings for the first time in his career, followed by Hunter Mahan, Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar, who nailed down the final spot when he tied for 10th at the PGA Championship. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Major League Notebook: August 25

Filed under: MLB NotebookHere is what's happening around baseball on Wednesday Aug. 25, 2010:

o. Rod Barajas grew up a Dodgers fan in Southern California, so just putting on an L.A. uniform for the first time at age 35 had to feel good for the veteran catcher. It only got better when the game started Tuesday, as Barajas went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer in his Dodgers debut after arriving via waivers from the Mets.

"It's been exciting," Barajas told reporters. "The fact that I came to the Dodgers was the real exciting part. If it was any other team, then I probably wouldn't be as excited. But being an L.A. boy and growing up cheering for these guys, I was nervous coming in here meeting new guys and performing with all my family and friends watching.

"They've said all along, we'd love to have you over here. I was afraid that if I didn't do well, I'd get some bad text messages. It's been a little hectic, but it's been great."

o. The Padres have "genuine interest" in outfielder Brad Hawpe, who should officially be a free agent any time now, according to Troy Renck fo the Denver Post.

o. The Cubs scored two runs in the fifth inning Tuesday against the Nationals -- their first runs in the fifth inning of any game since July 31.

o. Trever Miller's $2 million option for 2011 vested when he made his 45th appearance of the season Saturday, MLB Trade Rumors notes. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

NHL Confirms They're Still Investigating Controversial Contracts

Filed under: Blackhawks, Bruins, Canucks, Flyers, Eastern, Western, NHL Free AgencyWhen the NHL won their case involving the rejected contract of free agent Ilya Kovalchuk, it opened a can of worms.

Four other players -- Chris Pronger, Roberto Luongo, Marc Savard, and Marian Hossa -- had long-term deals that the league didn't like, and we learned those contracts were still under investigation, even though they had all been signed and registered with the league for some time.

There was no speculation from the league at the time as to what they would try to do about the contracts were they found to be against the rules. If they chose, the power existed to wipe the contracts off the books.

On Wednesday, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to NHL.com that these deals are still under investigation. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Women's Hockey Could Lose Status as Olympic Sport

Filed under: College Hockey, Team USA, Team Canada, International Hockey, Olympic HockeyThe World Hockey Summit kicks off Monday in Toronto, and there are plenty of serious issues to be discussed among some big names in the sport.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will be there Wednesday, and IIHF head Rene Fasel -- who has butted heads with Bettman on the issue of NHL players taking part in the 2014 Olympic games -- will speak Tuesday.

Thursday is an important day for one growing facet of hockey. The future of women's hockey is the main point of Thursday's session. The International Olympic Committee is losing patience with the sport, which has been completely dominated by the United States and Canada on the international level since its inception.

With talk of the sport losing its Olympic status, there are some big steps that must be taken to save it. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

FOX, CBS Set NFL Announcer Lineups

by Milton KentFiled under: NFL Media Watch, Sports Business and MediaThe NFL's Sunday afternoon broadcast carriers have set their announcing lineups for the coming season with few changes.

The biggest alteration to the landscape is that 13-time Emmy Award winner Dick Enberg won't be doing an NFL game for the first time in more than 40 years.

Enberg, who came to CBS in 2000 after calling eight Super Bowls on NBC, elected to call San Diego Padres games on television this year, taking himself out of the mix for both the NFL and college basketball. Ian Eagle moves up to Enberg's No.3 slot on the CBS pecking order, but Enberg's departure leaves a gaping hole in the NFL broadcasting landscape.

FOX, meanwhile, has added former Cardinals and Rams quarterback Kurt Warner as well as former Seahawks and Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr. to its analyst pool. Mora, who was fired last season, joins longtime play-by-play man Dick Stockton and analyst Charles Davis on FOX's third team, along with sideline reporter Laura Okmin. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Irish Defense Needs Improvement to Return to Elite Level

Aaron Taylor has vivid, if not entirely pleasant, memories of his first hours in a Notre Dame uniform in August of 1990.

"Chris Zorich was the guy who I took my first reps against," said Taylor, who was an offensive lineman. "He threw me to the ground and then he ragged on me. Over and over."

That evening Taylor slunk back to his dorm room. "And you have to remember," he said, "I was All-Everything in high school coming out of De La Salle. But that night I cried to my mom wondering if I could play at this level."

Zorich, a nose tackle three years Taylor's senior, won the Lombardi Award as the nation's outstanding college lineman in 1990.

Taylor, an offensive tackle, won the Lombardi Award in 1993.

No Fighting Irish player has won it since.

This isn't a story about the Lombardi Award. It's a story about defense. Or, more specifically, Notre Dame's lack of it in recent years.

In the modern era, the Fighting Irish have won national championships in 1966, 1973, 1977 and 1988. In those four seasons, they never finished lower than 10th in rushing defense and only once finished lower than 3rd (12th in 1977) in scoring defense. In the last four seasons under Charlie Weis, the Irish never finished better than 45th in rushing defense and never finished better than 42nd in scoring defense. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Works: To Live and Die by Team USA

Filed under: Wizards, FIBA, NBA Media Watch, USA Basketball, FIBA World ChampionshipIn The Works today, a guide to enjoying USA Basketball, the Delonte West-Gilbert Arenas comparison to end all Delonte West-Gilbert Arenas comparisons and a few words on Jason Whitlock's purpose.

But first, an indictment of the so-called architect of the new, improved USA Basketball program.

Slick as They Come: As we get deep into international competition, one thing simply must be said: Jerry Colangelo didn't save USA Basketball.

Well, at least not as advertised. He did get the commitments of superstars that led directly to the gold medal in Beijing (that should be read in your best Bill Cosby voice), but he didn't build anything lasting. And that, if you think back, was what we were promised. That's not to say that USA Basketball is in crisis. Despite a height-starved roster that has some people freaking out, America appears to be cruising right through the Worlds, which haven't even started yet.

After beating Spain and Lithuania in heated exhibitions this weekend, this Kevin Durant-led squad looks to have some pluck up its face. Cue Dracula laugh and thumb piano loops.

But what if Team USA gets trounced, and then -- thought of all thoughts -- can't recreate the star-studded surge of the Redeem Team? Colangelo asked for three years, stars gave it (some paid a price), and now, we're already seeing a reluctance to show up summer after summer. That's why we're headed into battle with a "we got next" squad that's more USA Select than August Team USA.

Then, we kick it back to Colangelo, brilliant architect of the new USA Basketball and ask, "what now?" Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michigan's Tate Forcier Earns His Wings, but Starting Job Still in Doubt

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said the quarterback practiced Thursday with the famed decals for the first time during training camp.

"We wanted to see some consistency a few days in a row," Rodriguez said.

Forcier started all 12 games last season, but he might not keep his job this year because he's being pushed by fellow sophomore Denard Robinson and highly touted freshman Devin Gardner. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Corey Pavin: Tiger 'High on My List' as Ryder Cup Pick

Filed under: PGA, PGA Championship, Ryder CupTiger Woods didn't make the list of players who automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup based on their standings amongst U.S. golfers.

But ignore for a second the awkwardness of Tiger missing that cut and look at the silver lining: Corey Pavin, the Ryder Cup captain, has Woods "high on my list" as one of the four captain's choices that Pavin has to make by Sept. 7.

You may recall that Pavin and Jim Gray had a little spat over the possibility of Tiger joining the Ryder Cup without qualifying: Gray reported that Pavin had already promised Tiger a spot, Pavin subsequently denied Gray's report, Gray came up to Pavin at the PGA Championship and told him he was "going down."

This little fracas is important because, clearly, Pavin wasn't happy with Gray's behavior or his claims and likely won't want to make it appear as if he did make any promises to Woods.

Additionally, Pavin said he'd like to see Tiger improve his tournament performance leading up to that deadline, but it's entirely possible that his statement is just to make sure that people know he's not already settled on adding Woods to the Ryder Cup field.

The only three tournaments remaining before Pavin's deadline are the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., this coming week, The Barclay's and the Deutsche Bank Championship -- the latter two are FedExCup tourneys. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Only Bobby Bowden Still Thinks He Can Coach at Florida State

Filed under: Florida State, CoachingBobby Bowden thought he was making a little news Tuesday. He did, but it won't be read like he wishes.

Bowden said Florida State forced him out after last season.

This is news?

Only if you were on Mars the past five years. Everybody saw it coming, and everybody could see how the remarkable story Bowden authored at FSU was not going to have a happy ending.

The only revelation Tuesday was that Bowden is still blind to the reasons he was let go. And all that did was confirm FSU did the right thing.

"Fired might be a little strong," Bowden told the Associated Press. "Pushed out ain't bad. I was pushed, no doubt about it."

He said that at the kickoff of a book tour in New York. It's standard promotional procedure to pluck something controversial from a book to generate buzz. If this is the best his publicists could come up with, Danielle Steele has nothing to worry about.

Ray Evernham Moves On As Old Team Disappears

Filed under: Dodge, NASCARAs announcements came down the last two weeks detailing the future of driver Kasey Kahne and revealing the direction of Richard Petty Motorsports, it felt like a long good-bye was at last complete -- the days when Richard Petty Motorsports was Evernham Motorsports done and gone.

But the NASCAR team's original namesake, Ray Evernham, told FanHouse.com Wednesday he's not really sentimental about the complete metamorphosis of the one-time championship contending operation he built from scratch.

"Obviously there's a certain sentimental value looking at what we had all hoped it would become and knowing that it didn't,'' Evernham said. "The reality is the (George) Gillett family now owns the majority interest and has had control for years. It's no different than if you sell your house or your car.''

"It's not the path I would have taken, but they own the controlling interests and the path they take is theirs," he said.

"Eventually the Ray Evernham DNA will be completely removed." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Andy Reid Reigns In Superb Group of NFC East Coaches

Filed under: Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Redskins, NFC EastOn Feb. 3, 2008, Tom Coughlin coached the underdog New York Giants to a monumental Super Bowl upset of the perfect New England Patriots, the NFL's first and only 16-0 team.

New Washington general Mike Shanahan, along with New England's Bill Belichick, is one of just two active coaches to lead a team to multiple Lombardi trophies.

Wade Phillips directed Dallas to the NFC East title in 2009, his second crown in three years with the Cowboys. Both that achievement and the subsequent playoff victory, Dallas' first in 13 years, came at the expense of Philadelphia and its coach Andy Reid.

But when rating the NFC East's quartet of experienced and accomplished coaches, Reid is still at the top of the list.

Of the 17 active coaches with at least four seasons in command, only Belichick has a higher winning percentage than Reid and not by much (.627 to .611). In fact, Reid has won a higher percentage of games during his 11 seasons with the Eagles than legendary Hall of Famers Tom Landry and Chuck Noll did during their coaching tenures.

Since he inherited a 3-13 team in January 1999 and turned it into a wild card qualifier in just his second season, Reid has been a consistent winner. The Eagles were 11-5 in 2000 and 2001, 12-4 in 2002 and 2003 and 13-3 during their 2004 NFC Championship season. Since the crash to 6-10 during the Terrell Owens-related fiasco of 2005, Philadelphia has gone 10-6, 8-8, 9-6-1 and 11-5 -- not as spectacular as the 2000-04 years, but still steady success. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Twelve Thoughts: Remember the Expos, Barry Bonds, Red Sox Survivors

Sixteen years ago today, greed dealt a fatal blow to one of baseball's emerging franchises.

The Montreal Expos never fully recovered from the labor stoppage of 1994, which removed a great young team from baseball's landscape that could've challenged the Yankees and Braves.

Felipe Alou's exciting club led the majors with a 74-40 record behind young stars such as Larry Walker (pictured at right), Pedro Martinez, Marquis Grissom, Moises Alou, Jeff Fassero and Cliff Floyd. In the farm system were Vladimir Guerrero, Jose Vidro, Javier Vazquez and Orlando Cabrera. Absent the labor stoppage, the Expos would've been a joy to watch in late 1994 and beyond. Their story is worth remembering in years ahead, when Big Media will release glowing retrospectives of the Selig Era.

o. West Coast Bias misses watching Barry Bonds, even sans bat.

Set aside what Bonds did with the cream or the clear, the man was diamond-sharp on the basepaths. His first step was ultra-quick, his anticipation skills and reads superb. Bonds had a noodle arm but played the best left field I saw in 15 years as a beat writer. Many good outfielders are afraid to play shallow. Not so Bonds, who took away singles that others would not and went back on balls like a center fielder would.

o. It's amazing that the pinstriped hackers who introduced a virus into The Matrix still haven't killed the machine.

The Red Sox aren't dead, far from it, despite a brutal series of injuries that causes one informed Sox fan in California to marvel at their staying power.

"I don't think any other team -- maybe the Yankees -- could have stayed in the race this long with that many star-player injuries," said Padres general manager Jed Hoyer, a former aide to Sox GM Theo Epstein. "Who knows, next year they could go injury-free. It's random bad luck."

Hoyer and a fellow exec recently mused that if "replacement-level" players were allied with all the Sox players who've gone onto the DL, that team might lead any another division. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentssoccer equipment title boxing

You Don't Have to Have Game to Get Into Basketball Hall of Fame

The list is as long as Michael Jordan's rambling, insulting and embarrassing speech (or whatever that was) last September in Springfield, Mass. Still, there is the worst when it comes to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, and the worst is the timing of its induction ceremony.

It occurs every year after the more riveting and relevant ones in Canton and Cooperstown.

You feel magic when teary-eyed Emmitt Smith kisses his bronzed bust in Canton, or while Michael Irvin speaks emotionally to his family in the crowd about changing his raggedy ways, or after Terry Bradshaw points to the sky and talks with emotion to the memory of Art Rooney, the deceased owner of his Pittsburgh Steelers.

The same drama also happens on a regular basis in Cooperstown, where Rickey Henderson sent lumps to throats by evolving from boastful player to humble inductee. Not only that, Bill Mazeroski triggered a roaring standing ovation after he spoke for less than three minutes before ending in mid-sentence to become a sobbing mess.

As for poignant moments in Springfield -- you know, excluding when Jordan finally shut up -- well, uh.

Hmmmm. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentsspinning bike bicycle helmets tippmann 98

Byron Hout Reveals Words That Sparked LeGarrette Blount Punch

Filed under: Boise State, OregonMany people have wondered what Boise State defensive end Byron Hout shouted at Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount that triggered Blount's vicious punch that knocked Hout to his knees following last year's season opener between the two teams.

Blount, a free-agent running back with the Tennessee Titans, has repeatedly apologized for the incident but has never revealed what was said -- not even to good friend Mark Southerland in his hometown of Perry, Fla.

However, Hout, a junior linebacker for the Broncos, detailed his version for the first time when he met with the media over the weekend. Hout's interview was his first in 11 months dating back to the punch that was replayed over and over on the television and Internet.

Hout, excited by the Broncos' 19-8 defeat of Oregon, told the Idaho Statesman that he slapped Blount on the shoulder. Blount had told Sports Illustrated that the Ducks owed the Broncos an "ass-whuppin'."

"How 'bout that (blank) whuppin'?" Hout said he told Blount. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentssoccer shop beer of the month club snowshoe mountain

Wayne Gretzky's Trade: 22nd Anniversary

Filed under: Kings, OilersIt's been 22 years since the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings orchestrated one of the biggest trades in NHL history, as Edmonton agreed to send Wayne Gretzky (along with Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski) to Los Angeles in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas and three future first-round draft picks on Aug. 9, 1988. It was a trade that shocked not only the entire NHL, but all of Canada.

The Oilers were coming off their fourth Stanley Cup in five years as part of their dominant late-80s dynasty, of which Gretzky was, obviously, a huge part. During the 1987-88 playoffs (Gretzky's last with the Oilers) he tallied 43 points in just 19 postseason games, which is to this day the third-best playoff performance in NHL history.

Here's a trip down memory lane and the video of Gretzky's goodbye to Edmonton ... Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentsshimano reels maxpedition outdoor gear

New Daytona Track Surface Gradually Takes Shape

Filed under: Daytona Int'l Speedway, NASCAR Tracks, NASCARLike a Marine recruit getting a haircut, the Daytona International Speedway track surface is being stripped to the sand as the repaving of the 2.5-mile speedway wrapped up its fifth week.

Working under the hot Florida sun, workers using heavy machinery continued to strip the asphalt from turn four while also putting new asphalt down on the frontstretch and backstretch. The first two layers of asphalt have been placed on these stretches.

Meanwhile, graders work to smooth the under-surface in turn three and put down asphalt primer, moving into turn four as the asphalt was removed there.

Also removed this week was the concrete patch (shown at right) that was installed in turn two following this year's Daytona 500, which NASCAR had to red-flag twice for repair work after the track surface in that turn began to break up.

Fans who are coming to the race next year and also want a piece of the old asphalt have until midnight Sunday to order tickets in a special offer that includes a piece of the old track with a ticket purchase.

Lane Construction, which has paved other International Speedway Corp. tracks, is expected to complete the work by Jan. 1. Speedweeks 2011 kicks off next Jan. 29 with the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The 53rd annual Daytona 500 is Feb. 20.

The company expects to use about 50,000 tons of asphalt to repave the speedway, which has more than 1.4 million square feet of track surface.

Hunter Mahan Wins Bridgestone as Ryder Cup Questions Loom

Filed under: PGAYou just have to know it's a good day when, coming down the home stretch, as pressure starts to mount like compound interest, you make par out of a flower planter.

Hunter Mahan did just that Sunday afternoon at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, on his way to victory in the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational. A free-drop out of the annuals after his tee shot on the monster-long 667-yard, par-5 16th hole went way right, and, bingo, a big-time victory that secured a U.S. Ryder Cup team berth. Is this a great game, or what?

"One of the TV guys said it was in a bush, in a flower bed, and I was thinking where the heck is a flower bed up there because I had no idea where," Mahan said. "There's stands behind and stands to the right. I'm like, gosh, I have no idea where we're going to drop this, this could take forever. It ended up being pretty quick. It was one drop, and it actually ended up being pretty easy."

Much like Mahan's day.

Beginning the final round three shots back, Mahan shot a bogey-free round 64 -- the lowest final-day score in the tournament's 12-year history -- for his third career PGA Tour title and second of the year. The round carried him to a 12-under finish, two shots better than Ryan Palmer (69), who began the day tied for the lead with Sean O'Hair.

John Skipper, an ESPN executive, said in a recent interview that changes were coming to ESPNEWS and ESPN Classic, which has also seen audience erosion.

ESPN's Pat Forde Goes From Anti-Tweet to the King of All Media Tweeters

Filed under: Media Watch, General CFB InsanityWhen Pat Forde created his Twitter account in April of 2009, he recalls thinking that it was stupid. "My first tweet," says Forde, a college football and basketball columnist for ESPN.com, "was, 'I have nothing interesting to say.'"

Sixteen months and more than 5,300 tweets later, Forde has long abandoned his initial prejudice toward Twitter. "It's kind of like sitting at this giant cyber-sports bar and only sitting next to people you find interesting," he says. "Twitter has pretty much become the morning newspaper. It's the first site I visit every day."

Millions of "internet people", as Florida coach Urban Meyer refers to us, follow suit. And many of them follow Forde, who is the most popular (27,677 followers as of Monday, August 9) tweep among sports writers who specifically cover college sports. Of course, in the time you have spent on this story, Erin Andrews has probably gained another thousand followers, but that's a different story.

"Twitter is like having a twisted AP wire," says Forde, whose Twitter bio reads "Father, husband, sportswriter, curmudgeon."

Darren Collison to Pacers, Trevor Ariza to Hornets in Potential Four-Team Trade

Filed under: Hornets, Nets, Pacers, Rockets, NBA Rumors, NBA TransactionsThe New Orleans Hornets are working on a deal that would send promising point guard Darren Collison (right) to the Indiana Pacers for swingman Trevor Ariza from the Houston Rockets in a four-team trade that also includes the New Jersey Nets. ESPN.com's Chad Ford first reported the story.

Collison and the Hornets' albatross veteran, James Posey, will go to Indiana in the deal, with New Orleans getting back only Ariza. The Pacers would send shooting big man Troy Murphy to the Nets, who would ship young two-guard Courtney Lee to Houston. Ford reported the deal could be approved by the NBA as early as Wednesday.

The agent for Murphy and Lee, Dan Fegan, confirmed the pieces of the trade to FanHouse's Sam Amick on Wednesday afternoon.

Collison has the smallest salary of all the players in the deal, but will likely have the biggest impact on the court next season. Indiana has been searching for a credible up-tempo point guard for coach Jim O'Brien's entire tenure with the Pacers; T.J. Ford, acquired in 2008, has been ineffective and fell completely out of favor last season, bleeding minutes to Earl Watson and A.J. Price. Collison, a rookie last season, thrived during Chris Paul's injury absences, and is seen as one of the best young up-tempo playmakers in the league.

tweetcount_src = 'RT @FanHouse:'; tweetcount_via = false; tweetcount_size = 'small'; tweetcount_background = 'FFFFFF'; tweetcount_border = 'CCCCCC'; tweetcount_api_key = '1cf4e3b7f7f20406a9dd9d1b1edc0e41b4fc20d1b21cb19a6f169387c696d333'; The deal helps the Hornets by replacing Posey's wasted salary with Ariza, a defensive ace who adds much-needed athleticism to New Orleans' wing rotation. Ariza tried his hand as a high-possession gunner for the Rockets last season. It didn't go well. Being set up consistently by Paul will help Ariza's efficiency immediately. And of course, the Hornets almost had to make a trade this summer to help win back Paul's crying heart. Collison is the best non-CP3 asset on the roster, and trading him sends the signal Paul is not for sale.

Still, the Rockets, by sending away 2009's major free-agent acquisition in Ariza for the lower-profile Lee, who figures to back up Kevin Martin at shooting guard, have admitted the so-called Ariza Experiment didn't work. The mid-season acquisition of Martin, the continued employment of brilliant wing defender Shane Battier and the surprisingly solid debut of Chase Budinger certainly make Ariza expendable, and Lee is no slouch. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentsbaby gear milltek altimeter

Phil Mickelson Closes on Bridgestone Lead, No. 1 Ranking

Filed under: PGAAKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Phil Mickelson is closing in on No. 1.

The first step is to make up a one-shot deficit against Retief Goosen, the 36-hole leader Friday at the Bridgestone Invitational. Looking more inevitable is Mickelson finally supplanting Tiger Woods atop the world ranking.

Goosen turned bogey into birdie by chipping in from 25 yards off the green at No. 4, sending him on his way to a 4-under 66 that gave him a one-shot lead over Mickelson and Justin Leonard (66) going into the weekend at Firestone.

Even as Goosen led another assault on par in soft conditions, Woods continued to look as ordinary as ever. The seven-time champion at Firestone hit only three fairways and stumbled to a 2-over 72-the first time he has ever had consecutive rounds over par at this tournament-that put him 13 shots out of the lead, and five players removed from last place.

Woods had no intention of speaking to reporters, instead walking to his car and driving away.

He has been No. 1 in the world since the week before the 2005 U.S. Open, but would lose his top ranking if Mickelson were to finish in fourth place alone and Woods-who is tied for 72nd-finishes out of the top 44.

"Obviously, it would be cool," Mickelson said. "It would be something I would love to do, being regarded as No. 1 according to the ranking. And I know that I've got a great opportunity this week. I know that I'm playing well, and this is my best opportunity."

Byron Leftwich Still Looks Like Favorite in Steelers' Early-Season QB Race

Filed under: Steelers, NFL Training Camp, NFL AnalysisLATROBE, Pa. -- Byron Leftwich didn't get any snaps at quarterback during practice at Steelers training camp here Monday, but don't read anything into that at all. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said that with four quarterbacks needing to get reps, he'll rest a different veteran QB every day. Monday was Leftiwch's day to get a break. He was back on the field Tuesday, working with the first team, which is probably where you'll see him in Week 1 when the Steelers open the regular season against the Falcons.

Tomlin isn't committing to a Week 1 starter yet. With Ben Roethlisberger suspended for at least the first four and possibly the first six games of the season, it'll either be Leftwich, Dennis Dixon or ultra-longshot Charlie Batch. But the sense around this camp is that Leftwich is the front-runner, which is fine with him. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentsstateline tack ipl live score hobby cnc

Kevin Durant Not Invited to White House: 'I Didn't Even Know'

Filed under: Thunder, Sports Business and Media, FIBA World ChampionshipNEW YORK -- President Barack Obama invited all sorts of star basketball players Sunday to the White House.

If you ask Kevin Durant, Obama forgot to send an invitation to his neighbor.

The Oklahoma City star forward is from Seat Pleasant, Md., which he calls "a minute or so outside of southeast D.C.'' But while current NBA players LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Grant Hill, Chauncey Billups, Derek Fisher, David West, Shane Battier and Etan Thomas and legends Magic Johnson and Bill Russell were at the event attended by wounded war veterans, Durant wasn't invited.

"I didn't even know it was going on until somebody told me on Twitter,'' Durant said in an interview with FanHouse following his Team USA's practice Tuesday at New York's John Jay College in preparation for this month's World Championship in Turkey. "I would have loved to be there. I'm from DC, and I never had a chance to go the White House. It would have been cool. But there's always next year. Hopefully, they'll do it again and I'll be invited.survival gear ipl t20 online bowling

UCF's George O'Leary Says He OK'd Controversial Photo Shoot

Filed under: UCFUniversity of Central Florida football coach George O'Leary said he approved a photo shoot that featured a Playboy Playmate dressed scantily inside a locker room, the Orlando Sentinel reported over the weekend.

Shanna Marie McLaughlin, Playboy's Miss July 2010, posed with Knights logos on what little clothing she had on and a UCF helmet in the shoot for Orlando entertainment magazine aXis, which had the UCF grad on its cover for August. Along with the photo spread, the magazine also filmed a video of the shoot that originally went online on Saturday.

"Eh, it's not what I expected, but I don't think there's anything outlandish on the thing," O'Leary told the newspaper. "I never saw the video."

O'Leary said the magazine, which was not accessible for parts of Monday morning, had used the athletic facilities before and there never had been a problem.  Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Commentstactical vest weight lifting routines airsoft
