LaShawn Merritt, Olympic Gold Medalist, Suspended 21 Months

Filed under: Track & FieldAmerican sprinter LaShawn Merritt has been suspended from track competition for 21 months for using a banned substance found in an over-the-counter male enhancement product. The suspension will be retroactive to last October and will run through July 2011.

Merritt won the gold medal in the 400-meter race at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The 21-month suspension was handed down by arbitrators on Monday. Earlier this year, Merritt accepted a provisional suspension.
