First-Place Islanders, Leafs Play Early Season Classic

Filed under: Islanders, Maple Leafs, NHL VideosOdd as it is to say, the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs are on top of their divisions and on top of the Eastern Conference. Tonight, the two teams squared off at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto for a game that had it all in what can surely be called a classic of the young season. This game had two disallowed goals, Dwayne Roloson's unexplained brilliance at the AAC, a fight (albeit not much of one), a wild finish to the third period and an overtime winner that came without a shootout. If that doesn't wet your palette, you're not a hockey fan.

The game didn't really pick up until the second period, but when it did the two teams shined. The Leafs outshot the Islanders 10-5 during the second frame but Dwayne Roloson stood on his head at the AAC once again. Roloson was named the starter over Rick DiPietro for tonight's game with the memory of Roloson's 58-save performance against the Leafs last year fresh on coach Scott Gordon's mind. The lone goal came from Matt Moulson off a beautiful feed on the rush from John Tavares.

The Leafs looked as if they had tied the game in the second when Kris Versteeg put one by Roloson but the play was immediately ruled dead by the referee for a high stick. Versteeg knocked the puck out of the air and then shot it past Roloson. It appeared to be the right call, although the home crowd wasn't happy.
