Filed under: MLBPHILADELPHIA -- Pay no attention to the snobs and pessimists who mourn what might have been. They grieve for a World Series rematch between the Yankees and the Phillies, the best two teams this side of the Mississippi. They cynically mock what the Fall Classic has instead wrought: the San Francisco Giants vs. the Texas Rangers, and if you had those odds back in April, you'd probably be a liar.
There might be a few thousand heads exploding in New York and Philadelphia, but anyone who prefers their sport shrouded in mystery and their teams populated with characters has to be salivating just a bit. Game 1 Wednesday at 24 Willie Mays Plaza, address of the gorgeous ballpark in San Francisco, can't come soon enough for most of us.
Maybe then the fingernails will have grown back; the heart will have stopped its dangerous sprints. The Giants won seven games this postseason. Six were by one run, the latest perhaps the most excruciating of all. Torture, the team calls itself. After Saturday night's dash across hot coals, the Giants are also known as the National League champs.
Game 6: Giants 3, Phillies 2 | Box Score
FanHouse in Philly: Jeff Fletcher | Tom Krasovic
