Big East Report: West Virginia And The Seven Dwarves?

Filed under: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida, Syracuse, West Virginia, Big EastFor years, fans and pundits belittled the Pac-10 as "USC and the nine dwarves." In 2010, something similar could happen in the Big East.

Call it "West Virginia and the seven dwarves." That could sound pretty stupid once conference play is complete but for now, we're rolling with it. The Mountaineers are the Big East's most consistent, competitive team out there, while picking two through eight in the rankings has been a hilarious exercise the last few weeks.

Credit the Mountaineers for never allowing more than 21 points in a game so far this year, including a shutout against Coastal Carolina. Meanwhile, their offense unloaded on UNLV for a breezy 49-10 victory last weekend. Quarterback Geno Smith is second in the conference to Zach Collaros in passing efficiency, good for an excellent 21st ranking nationally. West Virginia's lone blemish came at the hands of an LSU squad that so far refuses to be defeated. Point being, in a conference filled with potential, these guys are making a solid run at delivering the goods.

Rutgers

It is out there. One simply cannot ignore it. Rutgers has a quarterback controversy.

Injuries have sidelined sophomore quarterback Tom Savage -- the Big East's most experienced passer heading into this season -- creating an opening for true freshman Chas Dodd. Dodd sparked the Scarlet Knights' offense in throwing for over 300 yards in a last-second victory over Connecticut to open Big East play. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
