As his coach sees it, Jeremy Mincey is a starting defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars. But there's no guarantee it will be that way in two weeks.
Mincey, who earned a starting defensive end position this past week with the demotion of former first-round selection Derrick Harvey, missed the Jaguars' victory over the Dallas Cowboys with a broken hand/wrist sustained last Wednesday.
His injury came hours after he was named the starter, and rookie Austen Lane started in his place.
"We have two weeks before we tee it up again and so we'll have some good competition over the next couple of weeks," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "Right now Mincey is the starter, he just happened to be banged up. He was named the starter last week and broke his hand the day he was named and didn't end up playing.
"He'll be a few weeks into that process of healing up. He could be a candidate to be back by the time we go again, and so we'll just let it play out."
Del Rio said defensive line coach Joe Cullen will determine who starts.
"We'll see how that goes," Del Rio said, adding of Lane, "I think he was solid (Sunday). There were some things that he did where he'll be so much better with the experience. He's a young guy playing for the first time, or playing a bigger role than he had for the first time. I think that the experience that he got was good.
"He's a big, strong, active guy and so I think he added something there for us. It was a good experience for us."
