Reds Acquire Willie Bloomquist for Player to Be Named or Cash

Filed under: Reds, Royals, AL Central, NL Central, MLB TransactionsRoyals' utilityman Willie Bloomquist has been traded to the Cincinnati Reds. In return, Kansas City will get either a player to be named or cash.

Bloomquist has played a reduced role on the Royals in 2010 after starting for the club much of last season. He's racked up just 181 plate appearances in 72 games this year, hitting .265/.296/.388. He's made appearances in each of the seven field positions, though, which is probably worth some kind of door prize.

Because he's been acquired well after the Sept. 1 deadline, the Reds will be unable to place him on their postseason roster. He's due for free agency at the end of this season and according to MLB Trade Rumors, he's not likely to qualify as a Type-A or -B free agent, which means that the Reds can't expect a draft pick in return for him if he signs elsewhere. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
