Jim Joyce to Umpire Home Plate for Armando Galarraga's Friday Start

Filed under: Tigers, MLB UmpiresFans of heartwarming pregame scenes should probably tune into the Tigers' game against the Orioles on Friday night, which will see Armando Galarraga reunited with Jim Joyce at Comerica Park for the first time since the umpire's blown call cost the Detroit pitcher a perfect game.

And not only will Joyce be part of the umpiring crew working the game, he'll be behind the plate calling balls and strikes. That will put the spotlight squarely on Joyce as long as Galarraga is pitching, but the umpire told the Detroit Free Press he'd rather be there than 90 feet away, at the scene of the June 2 crime.

"I would probably rather be behind the plate than stand there at first base and have to relive that visualization of being at first base with him pitching," Joyce said. "It's better for me and my psyche to be behind the plate that night. As a matter of fact, I'm actually looking forward to it."
