On Friday, the 24-year-old winger signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Obviously, it's a low-risk, high-reward move, and if there's one team in the NHL that's had success with this type of reclamation project it's the Hurricanes.
In recent years, the team picked up Sergei Samsonov from the NHL's scrap heap and ended up with a near 50-point season from him in 2009 when the team made a surprising run to the Eastern Conference Finals. That was also the same season the 'Canes took a chance on a struggling Jussi Jokinen, acquiring from Tampa Bay for an assortment of spare parts, and ended up getting a 30-goal scorer the following year.
