McMurphy's Picks: No Joke, Bowl Selections O' Plenty

There was some troubling news from San Francisco last week when Macy's fired a veteran Santa Claus after an older couple complained he told them a joke that was "inappropriate."

The San Francisco Chronicle
reported John Toomey, 68, who had been Santa the past 20 years at the Macy's in Union Square, was terminated because of objections from an older woman and her husband.

"When I ask the older people who sit on my lap if they've been good and they say, 'Yes,' I say, 'Gee, that's too bad,' " Toomey told the Chronicle. "Then, if they ask why Santa is so jolly, I joke that it's because I know where all the naughty boys and girls live."

That's it? Firing Santa Claus for telling a bad joke? Thankfully, McMurphy's Picks don't have those same standards or I would have been gone a long time ago.

But since I'm still around, I'll do my best to spread some holiday cheer with the first of four consecutive weeks of bowl selections each Thursday.
