Ronnie Brown Awarded Walter Payton Man of the Year

DAVIE, Fla. -- The last player to wear a Miami Dolphins uniform and be named the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year was Jason Taylor back in 2007, and now one of his prodigies when it comes to giving back to the South Florida community is in the running this year.

Running back Ronnie Brown was named the Dolphins' Man of the Year on Wednesday, which means he is the team's nominee for the league award, and it was Taylor who Brown credited with mentoring him as soon as he joined the team as a rookie in 2005. Brown even paired up with the same man who runs The Jason Taylor Foundation, Seth Levit, to launch his Ronnie Brown Project.

"Just getting to know him and some of the things that he did and him asking me to come and help out with some of those things was big," Brown said of Taylor. "The way that he handled himself in the community and the way he's received by the people in the community, I think he did a great job. He kind of mentored me and made me realize that there are things that are bigger than actually being on the football field."

Brown's centerpiece is his "23 Ways To Stop Youth Violence" campaign, which involves him going out to area schools throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and speaking to middle school and high school students. He talks to them about his upbringing in rural Georgia and the lessons he was taught by his parents and teachers focusing on respecting other people and handling conflicts in a civil manner rather than resorting to violence.
