Former Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Donald Fehr is on the verge of being named the new executive director of the NHL Players Association, according to TSN. The report says the official announcement could happen as soon as this weekend.Fehr ran the baseball union for 26 years, and he will replace Paul Kelly, who was abruptly fired in 2009 and now runs College Hockey, Inc., an organization designed to promote and expand U.S. college hockey.
The appointment doesn't require a full vote of the union membership, but the process was a bit slower than expected because Fehr wanted to get every NHL player's input.
The league and players extended the already-existing collective bargaining agreement through the 2012-13 season, giving Fehr and his staff more time to get settled in before what could be another in a long series of contentious battles between NHL owners and players.
TSN notes that Fehr is considered a popular choice among NHL players.
