Brandon Jacobs Might Play Bigger Role in Giants' Offense in 2011

INDIANAPOLIS -- Brandon Jacobs isn't at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine.

But there seems little question the New York Giants running back probably likes what he hears from Indianapolis this week.

On Friday, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he'd like to get the seventh-year veteran more involved in the offense after he averaged 5.6 yards on 147 carries last season, rushing for 823 yards and nine touchdowns.

"You look at the end of the year numbers, you'd want him to have a few more carries," Coughlin said. "Brandon was fresher than he's ever been, healthier than he's ever been and probably needs to carry the ball a little bit more."

On Saturday, Giants general manager Jerry Reese agreed.

Jody Gerut Leaves Mariners Camp, Baseball, Citing Loss of Passion

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Outfielder Jody Gerut, who came up with the Indians in 2003 and played with five different Major League teams, retired in the camp of a sixth Sunday.

Gerut, who was given a 50-50 chance to make the opening day roster of the Seattle Mariners at age 33, said that his energy to play the game as well as he could was gone.

"I can no longer in good conscience play the game in a manner that reflects the positive example for the younger generation of baseball players,'' Gerut said. "Physically, I'm fine. But mentally my reasons for wanting to be in uniform have become so thing and narrow that I refuse to disrespect the game that has provided so generously for my family by playing it in a halfhearted way.''

Heat Look Forward to Facing New Look Knicks in Renewed Rivalry

LeBron James isn't ready to call it a rivalry. Most of the media have already declared it so, especially once Carmelo Anthony came into the picture. But with only a few teams in the East with realistic chances of making a deep playoff run, the Miami Heat may have no choice but to embrace a reunion between two teams with plenty of shared history.

"We know the Heat and Knicks rivalry is way beyond our years," said James, who was only 16 the last time these two teams faced each other in the postseason with the likes of Alonzo Mourning, Patrick Ewing, Tim Hardaway and Allan Houston battling it out. "It basically started with the departure of the man upstairs coming down here and leaving New York."

The path James and that man upstairs, Pat Riley, took to Miami are quite similar in both the abrupt manner they left their former teams and the subsequent firestorm of controversy it set off. While James is aware of the bad blood between the two franchises, he hasn't forgotten that it's also been a decade since they faced off in meaningful games.

"First of all, rivalries don't start until you have a playoff series or two," said James. "But we'll welcome it back, we have no problem with bringing that old rivalry back and making it fun like it has been in the past."

Dwyane Wade arrived in Miami a few years after the Knicks began their decline into perennial lottery team status but has had his fair share of battles with them in the regular season, including a 55 point performance on April 12, 2009. Though the Knicks haven't won in Miami for almost three years, Wade is excited to see if they are truly a competitive adversary.

2012 Daytona 500 Will Run Feb. 26

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Next year's 54th annual Daytona 500 will be run on Feb. 26, a week later than usual, Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III announced here Sunday.

The move shortens the NASCAR Sprint Cup season by one week, but also eliminates the March off weekend, one of the rare off weekends in Sprint Cup racing during the February-to-November season.

It also adds a bit of a cushion in case the Super Bowl is pushed back another weekend.

Chitwood said eliminating the March off weekend will have a positive effect because "many fans and media partners have said (it) created a drop in momentum in the early part of the racing season."

Cam Newton Shouldn't Change for Us, the NFL or Anybody

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cam Newton felt the need to apologize, or at least explain himself, but he needn't have. The biggest star at the NFL scouting combine began his news conference by reading a prepared statement intended to explain his eyebrow-raising "entertainer and icon" comments from earlier in the week. He was contrite. He was humble. Then he folded up the piece of paper and started taking questions, and he was Cam. And that's when it got good.

Newton is confident. He is engaging. He has a superstar's smile and a well-earned belief in himself that should make teams feel better, not worse, about making him their quarterback. He wears the mistakes of his past with a grown-up's wisdom and perspective. He has all the makings of a potential icon, and an entertaining one. The only thing telling this kid not to strive to be awesome is the stodgy old NFL establishment that recoils against anything and anybody who's off-script. Newton should shrug it off and keep scrambling out of the pocket en route to greatness.

Several Pistons Miss Shootaround

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Several Detroit Pistons missed at least part of the team's shootaround before Friday night's game at Philadelphia, the latest incident on what has been a difficult season for the proud franchise.

Team spokesman Cletus Lewis said Richard Hamilton, Chris Wilcox, Rodney Stuckey and Austin Daye missed the bus, with Stuckey and Daye able to arrive late.

Tayshaun Prince, Tracy McGrady and Ben Wallace also missed the shootaround. Lewis said Prince had an upset stomach, McGrady had a headache and Wallace was tending to an unspecified family matter.

Detroit entered the night 21-38 and is almost certainly headed to its third straight losing season. There have been signs of disharmony almost from the beginning. Coach John Kuester benched Stuckey barely a week into the season, although that was only temporary.

Kuester then benched Hamilton on Jan. 12, and he didn't play again until a Feb. 5 game at Milwaukee. Hamilton has missed every game since then. The team has said Hamilton has a groin injury.

The team was unable to trade Hamilton before Thursday's deadline. He's guaranteed $20 million over the next two seasons.

Wallace missed eight games in January. He's battled ankle problems and also left the team to tend to a family matter.

Eric LeGrand, Paralyzed Rutgers Player, Makes First Public Appearance

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand made his first public appearance since being paralyzed in a game against Army more than four months ago.

LeGrand attended a "Laugh to Heal Comedy Fest Fundraiser" for him at the Rutgers Athletic Center on Saturday.

"I just want to thank everybody for coming out here today and I'm just going to keep on chopping during my rehab," LeGrand told the crowd of approximately 3,000 who attended the comedy show featuring Rutgers alumnus Bill Bellamy.

The event was for the "Eric LeGrand Believe Fund."

Rutgers spokesman Jason Baum did not know on Monday how much money was raised over the weekend.

It was LeGrand's second trip to Rutgers since the injury. He also joined his teammates for the first team meeting of the semester in January.

The junior defensive tackle has resumed his coursework at Rutgers, joining via videoconference last month for a class on "Blacks and Economic Structures."

LeGrand remains paralyzed below the neck. The Avenel, N.J., resident fractured his C3 and C4 vertebrae while making a head-first tackle on a kickoff in the win over Army at New Meadowlands Stadium.

LeGrand has regained movement in his shoulders and is experiencing sensation throughout his body. He is undergoing rehabilitation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, N.J.

Tennessee Makes Special Delivery to NCAA: Lane Kiffin

For the past several months the University of Tennessee and the NCAA have been feverishly negotiating the notice of allegations that UT released Wednesday. The damage to the Volunteer athletic program was significant, but it wasn't crippling. Why? Because Tennessee handled the NCAA, a bureaucratic agency that answers to its own regulations and precedent as it sees fit, just about as well as a university can.

By that I mean that Tennessee immediately retained heavyweight attorney Mike Glazier, who specializes in these investigations and is worth his weight in gold. Whatever legal fees the Vols paid him in 2010 and '11, Tennessee got the best bargain for its money in college football this side of Cam Newton. They ought to retire his gavel on the ring of honor at Neyland Stadium.

In earlier drafts of the notice of allegations the Volunteer football program was set to take a hit for a major violation, a failure to monitor, alongside Lane Kiffin. Then, voila, Glazier worked his magic in the last two weeks and not only managed to avoid a direct hit to the football program, but he delivered Lane Kiffin's head on a silver platter to the NCAA.

Throughout this investigation, according to multiple sources, the goal of Tennessee was to isolate the football violations and place them squarely upon Lane Kiffin and his staff. Ultimately the Vols succeeded in going state's evidence and making Lane Kiffin football's fall guy.

A few months ago, Bruce Pearl said he missed Lane Kiffin being in Knoxville because Kiffin would always put his foot in his mouth and get the attention off Pearl. Well, Pearl got his wish. For one last time, Kiffin delivered the Volunteer basketball coach the ultimate gift, on a day that Pearl got slammed with seven major violations, a great deal of attention has shifted to the only real surprise from the notice, Kiffin's being hit with two major violations of his own.

Let's dive in and consider six other major takeaways from the notice of allegations arriving.

Bears Hand Lovie Smith 2-Year Extension

CHICAGO (AP) -- Out of patience after three straight playoff misses, many Chicago fans were calling for coach Lovie Smith to be fired a year ago.

The Bears stuck with him. Now, they plan to keep him around a little longer.

The Bears gave Smith a two-year contract extension Friday, keeping him through the 2013 season after a year in which his team won the NFC North at 11-5 and reached the conference championship game.

Smith, who led the Bears to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season, is 63-49 over seven regular seasons and is 3-3 in the playoffs.

"Every day I've been on the job, the goal has been to do the best possible job that I could, and I could live with the results," Smith said. "With three years on my contract, I feel pretty good about that."

Labor Cloud Hovers Over NFL's Combine

INDIANAPOLIS -- They can all pretend it's business as usual, but those who do are in trouble. Coaches, GMs and draft prospects gathering here for the annual NFL Scouting Combine have largely been shrugging off the potential impact of the league's labor unrest on their individual situations at their own peril. The likelihood remains strong that the NFL is a week away from a lockout, and unless these brave faces are disguising the real plans of teams and players, a lot of people aren't going to know what to do if that happens.

To that end, there was this meeting about which you likely heard. It's an annual meeting, held each February at this very same Westin hotel, in which the league assembles all coaches and GMs for a briefing on league business. It does not, usually, take place with dozens of members of the NFL media assembled just outside the doors. But such in the state of the current NFL. A meeting in which the labor situation is discussed is going to get some attention -- even if it turns out to be real short on details.

"The message, basically, was that everybody's still hoping a deal will get done, but in case it doesn't, these are some of the scenarios that could play out," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said after leaving the one-hour meeting Thursday night. "So, more of an information session, really."

Tiger Woods Falls Short With 3-Over Final Round in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Tiger Woods stumbled in a bid for his first victory in 15 months Sunday, leaving Alvaro Quiros to win the Dubai Desert Classic with a wild round that included a hole-in-one and triple bogey.

The 70th-ranked Quiros shot a 68 to finish at 11-under 277, one stroke ahead of Anders Hansen of Denmark (70) and James Kingston of South Africa (67).

Woods had a 75 to end tied for 20th at 4-under 284.

"There were quite a few positives this week but a couple of glaring examples of what I need to work on," Woods said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats have agreed to trade forward Gerald Wallace to the Portland Trail Blazers for a package that includes two first-round picks as owner Michael Jordan cuts payroll and eyes the future.

Coach Paul Silas confirmed Thursday the deal made just before the deadline would also give the Bobcats little-used center Joel Przybilla and reserve forward Dante Cunningham.

The Bobcats also sent backup center Nazr Mohammed to Oklahoma City for reserve forward D.J. White and the expiring contract of guard Morris Peterson.

Wallace, averaging 15.6 points and 8.2 rebounds, was the last original member of the expansion team and the franchise's only All-Star.

Bahrain F1 Race Canceled Due to Unrest

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) -- The crown prince of Bahrain called off Formula One's season-opening race Monday, handing another victory to protesters aiming to break the ruling dynasty's stranglehold on power in the Gulf kingdom.

Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa owns the rights to grand prix and serves as commander of the armed forces in an island country were at least eight protesters have been killed in a week of unrest. Angry protesters, who see the Bahrain GP as particularly meaningful to him, wanted the March 13 race dropped.

Facing more demonstrations around an event that draws a worldwide TV audience of around 100 million in 187 countries, the crown prince told F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone by telephone that the race would not go ahead.

"We felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain's Formula One race to a later date," Bahrain's crown prince said in a statement.

After launching deadly attacks on protesters at a landmark in the capital city of Manama, the nation's security forces pulled back Saturday under international pressure and allowed demonstrators to occupy Pearl Square. The protesters have now established a tent city there.

That's how Jackie Moon, played by Will Ferrell in the movie Semi-Pro, made the introduction.

You know how Ferrell movies are just too ridiculous? How they could never come true?

Think again.

That was the movie, about a fictional and fledgling team from the old ABA, running ridiculous stunts and promotions to try to stay alive.

This is real life: On Saturday night, the Indianapolis Ice of the United States Hockey League held its own impossible-shot promotion. Shoot the puck the length of the ice into the far net, which was blocked off entirely except for a three-inch slot at the bottom.

Monday Movers: Yani Tseng's Dynasty, Mobile Phones

Each week, Monday Movers will look back on the previous week in the golf world to see whose stock is rising and who will likely be heading back to the range.

Stock Up

Yani Tseng -- A week after taking over the No. 1 ranking, Tseng won her third straight event of the year, this time by five strokes over Michelle Wie at the Honda LPGA Thailand. Obviously the LPGA lacks the popularity of its male counterpart, but it's a shame that Tseng doesn't get more publicity. At just 22 years of age, she's already earned the title of youngest major winner and youngest to reach No. 1 in the world. And how is this for peer approval? Describing her game, Wie said, "Yani played fantastic. She played like a rock star out there. She made every single putt and zero mistakes. Congrats to her."

Aaron Baddeley -- Less than a month before his 30th birthday, the Australian added his third PGA Tour victory to his trophy case at the Northern Trust Open. Badds, as he's nicknamed, overtook crowd favorite Fred Cuples at the top of the leaderboard following the third round and never relinquished the lead. Amazingly, Baddeley started the year ranked 274th in the world and was sitting 224th before this week. That just speaks at how he's struggled since his last win in February of 2007. He'll now head to the Masters for just the third time in his career, and the first since finishing T17 two years ago.

Turn Back the Clock -- A couple of tour veterans almost stole the show at Riviera. Fred Couples and Vijay Singh took fans back a few years when their names showed up at the top of the leaderboard. The smooth-swinging Couples looks to have his game in order much earlier than his yearly appearance on the Masters leaderboard. He led after rounds one and two, but a tender back slowed him down and resulted in a tie for 7th. Singh, on the other hand, maintained his putter all weekend, riding it to a 2nd place finish. The former World No.1 has shown much more consistency in his game thus far, and he called this week his best putting performance ever.

Mobile Phones -- Beginning in March, PGA fans will be able to bring their mobile phones to tournaments going forward. After experimenting with the policy to begin this year, the Tour officially approved the decision last week. Although there will be added disruptions despite prohibiting ringers, it's a good move by the tour. It's not only because of how integral phones have become in our daily lives, but also because it helps promote the Tour. Maybe you'll see interest increase when people's Twitter and Facebook feeds start filling up with PGA updates like they do with other sports.

Barclays to Bethpage? -- According to a report by the Associated Press, The Barclays is trying to take its tournament to Bethpage Black, the Long Island public course that has hosted the U.S. Open twice. The Barclays is the opening event in the FedEx Cup playoff and has previously been played at different locations around New York and New Jersey. There will be a few hurdles to jump before this could happen - mainly approval of state funding to help maintain the course's conditions during and after the competition. If the move happens, the popular location that attracts a blue-collar crowd would make a great location to kick-off the playoff.

Rangers See Reward in Neftali Feliz Risk

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- No one can accuse the Texas Rangers of not being risk-takers.

The Rangers are taking one of their 2010 breakout stars, closer Neftali Feliz, and giving him a chance to make the starting rotation.

It's not the kind of move that most defending American League champions make. Feliz saved 40 games last year and didn't give up any runs (and just one hit) in six innings of combined work in the American League Championship Series against the Yankees and in the World Series against the Giants.

None of Feliz's 90 games in the big leagues the last two seasons have been starts. But he was a starter after signing with Atlanta and later after being traded to the Rangers in what is becoming ever more clearly one of the great swindles in the game. Back in 2007, the Atlanta Braves, desperate for the power that switch-hitting first baseman Mark Teixeira could bring, traded Feliz, shortstop Elvis Andrus, right-hander Matt Harrison, outfielder Beau Jones and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia for Teixeira and lefty middle reliever Ron Mahay.

Feliz is the defending AL Rookie of the Year, Andrus is maybe the best defensive shortstop in the league and Harrison is a sometimes starter with promise. In exchange, the Braves got 54 games from Teixeira in which he hit .321 with 17 homers and 56 RBI. Atlanta finished third for all of that and Teixeira lit off for Anaheim and later Gotham where, curiously, he was eliminated from the 2010 World Series by Feliz, Andrus and the Rangers.

Mickelson in Contention at Phoenix Open

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Phil Mickelson was locked in concentration over a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th, the some 20,000 onlookers mostly quiet on the amphitheater hole except a fan who screamed "Tiger would make it!"

Playing partner Bill Haas heard it, but Mickelson was oblivious to the slight, perfectly striking the putt that drew a thunderous cheer when it dropped in.

"It's Saturday of the Phoenix Open. It's always fun," Mickelson said. "There's a lot of people out here. I don't think there's a shot I wanted to make more, other than a major championship, than that putt on 16. I wanted to make that so bad.

"To see that go in with the crowd right there was a great feeling."

The birdie and another on the short par-4 17th helped Mickelson close within four strokes of leader Tommy Gainey halfway through the frost-delayed tournament.

"There's a lot of golf left," Mickelson said. "Even though it's Saturday -- it feels like it's the third round -- but we've only played two, so we're halfway through and to be within a few shots, it's where everybody is trying to get to."

Match Play Presents Early Intrigue, Often Unfulfilling Final Rounds

This week's WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., could be something really special.

Or it might not.

That's the tricky thing about match play. When competition begins Wednesday with 64 of the top ranked players in the world, there will be all sorts of intriguing possibilities. A few times over the years, promise has even delivered. In 2000, Darren Clarke beat Tiger Woods in the final. Woods won in 2003 by taking down David Toms in the final and won again in 2004 over Davis Love III. Woods defeated Stewart Cink in 2008. Even last year, although an all-England final, Ian Poulter's victory over Paul Casey had its viewing strengths.

But then there was 2001 when Steve Stricker beat Pierre Fulke in the Sunday final. Or 2007 when Henrik Stenson beat Geoff Ogilvy. And who doesn't remember Kevin Sutherland's 1-up decision over Scott McCarron in 2002?

Because players are eliminated as the week wears on, it is always possible that by the time Sunday's final match arrives, there is the possibility of a "Who's He?" taking on "Who Cares?"

That makes match play events fascinating in that much of the intrigue often occurs early in the week, and the final days can drag.

Cavs' Trade for Baron Davis Was All About the Draft Pick

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- What does a rebuilding team do when it wants draft picks to help recover from the departure of the league's two-time MVP? It trades another of its popular players for a first-round pick, and agrees to take on almost $28 million in salary for an aging, oft-injured point guard.

Such is the fate of the Cleveland Cavaliers that it celebrated a trade Thursday that took point guard Baron Davis from his home in Los Angeles and dropped him in Cleveland in the middle of winter. Davis goes from playing on the same team as Blake Griffin to joining a 10-47 team.

And the Cavs were exultant -- because they acquired a first-round draft pick that will give them two lottery picks this summer. They said they were happy about acquiring Davis, too, but sending Mo Williams and Jamario Moon to the Clippers was much more about getting that first-round draft pick.

"Our scouting department just got a little busier, which is a good thing," said GM Chris Grant.

Fiesta Bowl CEO Under Investigation, Placed on Administrative Leave

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Fiesta Bowl chief executive John Junker has been placed on administrative leave while officials investigate allegations of improper political campaign contributions and expense reimbursements by bowl employees.

Bowl organizers said Monday in a news release that an independent investigation is being conducted by a special committee of the board of directors consisting of retired Arizona Supreme Court Justice Ruth McGregor and Fiesta Bowl Directors Jim Bruner and Steve Whiteman.

The board doesn't have a definitive timeframe for when the investigation will be completed.

Marking 10 years since the death of his legendary father in NASCAR's most important race, Earnhardt Jr. served as the central beacon of a sport remembering the passing of one of its most legendary drivers.

The sport's most popular driver also has been the most talked about non-factor for most of the last three seasons and has seen his share of changes in the Hendrick Motorsports program around him. A new crew chief -- Steve Letarte -- was in his ear.

Sunday, none of it seemed to be a distraction as Earnhardt sliced his way through the field time and again to find the front -- and occasionally lead -- one of the most unusual Daytona 500s in recent memory.

However, the chaotic nature of NASCAR's season-opening beast, a race marked by the most cautions and lead changes in the event's 53-year history, finally caught up with Earnhardt moments from the end.

East Dominates West in Shrine Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Marvin Austin kept mostly a low profile in the practice sessions leading up to the East-West Shrine Game.

After sitting out this past season following his involvement in the agent scandal that rocked North Carolina's football program, he had a lot to prove Saturday in the annual showcase for college seniors.

So grabbing a late-game fumble recovery for a touchdown to punctuate a 25-8 victory for the East over the West more than made his week in Orlando worthwhile.

"I sat the whole season out. Everybody knows it," Austin said. "People thought I was going to feel sorry for myself. ... A lot of people talk about my talent. They don't see the work I put in to try to be the best. They (the NFL) say they just want me to be confident and keep playing hard."

That workhorse spirit was exhibited throughout an East team that dominated first major all-star game of the draft season.

Syracuse running back Delone Carter ran for a touchdown and was selected the offensive MVP and Richmond tackle Martin Parker had a pair of sacks and forced a fumble to take defensive MVP honors.

The East scored 19 points in the first half and recovered three fumbles. It also had a team safety.

Carter finished with 54 yards on 11 carries, while Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor had the best passing day for the East, going 4 of 5 for 59 yards.

Austin's highlight came with 3:41 left in the fourth quarter when West quarterback Jerrod Johnson of Texas A&M was sacked by Tennessee's Chris Walker inside the 2. The ball trickled into the end zone and was recovered by Austin.

Parker had 96 tackles this past season and 5½ sacks. He was projected to be a late-round pick, but said he ignored all of that this week.

"My goal coming down here was just to play a solid game and just show the scouts, (and) show the people what I could do," Parker said. "It never crossed my mind that I would go out there and be defensive player of the game. I'm really thankful and grateful for it."

The West managed just 14 yards rushing yards and had just eight first downs. Its lone score came on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Idaho's Nathan Enderle to Portland State tight end Julius Thomas with 2:44 left in the second quarter. The pair also hooked up for a 2-point conversion pass. Enderle was 6 of 12 for 45 yards.

The West's best effort on defense came from Oklahoma State linebacker Orie Lemon, who finished with eight tackles. He said he will let his play speak for itself regarding the future.

"I put it all in God's hands and I'll let him do his will," Lemon said. "Wherever he takes me, that's where I'm going."

The East led 19-8 at halftime, dominating the time of possession in the opening 30 minutes and riding the play of a stingy defense that had a pair of fumble recoveries.

West running back and Hawaii product Alex Green fumbled on the opening play of the game to set up a 16-yard touchdown run by Carter.

The lead grew to 9-0 with 8:59 left in the first quarter when Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien was sacked at his own 5 by Oregon defensive end Kenny Rowe. The ball rolled into the end zone and was recovered by Illinois' Randall Hunt for a safety.

Following the free kick, the East capped the first extended drive of the day with a 4-yard touchdown run by Penn State's Evan Royster.

Auburn kicker Wes Byrum, who had the winning kick in the Tigers' national championship game win over Oregon, connected on one of three field goal attempts in the first half. He hit from 25 yards and had misses from 27 and 44 yards.

The East held the ball for 18:32 in the first half, compared to just 11:28 for the West. The East also had 11 first downs, to just four for the West.

Camilo Villegas Disqualified After TV Viewer Notes Rules Violation

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) -- The Tournament of Champions lost another star player Friday when Camilo Villegas was disqualified for a rules violation that a television viewer called in after the opening round at Kapalua.

Villegas was chipping up the slope to the 15th green when the ball twice rolled back toward him. The second time, Villegas walked over and casually swatted away some loose pieces of grass in front of the divot as the ball was still moving down the slope.

That is a violation of Rule 23-1 that says, "When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed." The penalty is two shots. Villegas opened with a 72, and he was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

Making it worse, Villegas was celebrating his 29th birthday Friday.

Serena Williams to Drop Out of Top 10; Venus Out of Top 5

The year hasn't started off well for the Williams sisters, and there doesn't seem to be much light at the end of the tunnel for the injured pair.

The dominant sisters, who have won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles together, are both projected to have their WTA rankings plummet following the Australian Open.

The younger Williams, Serena, was ranked No. 1 on tour last season before injuring herself in an off-court incident that required surgery shortly after Wimbledon. The 13-time Grand Slam singles champion, who won last year's Australian Open and Wimbledon singles titles, has not returned to the tour following the accident last July.

Unable to defend her title at Melbourne Park, Serena is projected to fall out of the top 10 and is estimated to hover around the No. 13 spot, the WTA told The Associated Press. It will be a three-year low for Serena, who was ranked No. 4 entering this year's Australian Open.

When Eric Soza occasionally takes a break from his studies and the film sessions and strolls along the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, people approach him or whisper as he walks by. In most places, only the most knowledgeable of the diehard college football fans would have any idea who he was, but in San Antonio they know.

He's their quarterback, and he can barely leave home without somebody telling him how excited they are for his next game.

That next game -- the first in the history of the University of Texas at San Antonio -- is nine months away, but that's just a matter of time to folks there. Soza is going to take snaps for the Roadrunners, their new favorite team, which makes him big man on campus and around town.

"Everything here is pretty unique," said Soza, a redshirt freshman transfer from Texas State. "Throughout this whole fall, we didn't think of it as a year off. Next year we are going to be playing and it will be for real so we've been getting ready. Everybody is ready. People come up to me all the time and say, 'Hey, we already got our season tickets.'"

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Boxing promoter Don King was stopped by security at Cleveland's Hopkins International Airport for having ammunition in his carry-on luggage.

Hopkins Airport spokeswoman Jacqueline Mayo says the 79-year-old King was stopped by members of the Transportation Safety Administration on Sunday night. She says King had ammunition for .38-caliber and .357-caliber firearms in his bag.

Mayo says the ammunition was taken and that King was released to continue his trip, she believes to Florida. She said she didn't know if King received a citation.

Alan Anderson was the second overall pick in this year's D-League Draft and one of the league's top scorers, but a FanHouse source has confirmed that the former Charlotte Bobcat is taking his talents back to Europe.

A 6-foot-6 forward in his sixth year out of Michigan State, Anderson returned stateside this year in hopes of a call-up to the NBA after spending the previous three seasons in Europe. However, after just 10 games with the New Mexico Thunderbirds, he's now in the process of buying out of his D-League contract to sign with Regal FC Barcelona in Spain.

Anderson, the D-League's third-leading scorer, will join former first-round NBA Draft picks Ricky Rubio and Fran Vazquez as well as former Memphis Grizzlies point guard Juan Carlos Navarro on the reigning Euroleague champion's squad.

An extremely gifted scorer, Anderson had been averaging a solid 21.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists while leading the Thunderbirds to a Western Conference-leading 7-3 record before sitting out Friday night's game in anticipation of going overseas.

NEW YORK -- Lisa Leslie may be the most recognizable name in the history of the WNBA.

Her credentials are impressive: two-time WNBA champion, three-time league MVP, eight-time All-Star, and, of course, she was the first player ever to dunk in a WNBA game.

Leslie's name recognition, however, goes beyond the avid basketball fan. She is a mainstream figure, not simply because of her on-court resume, but also because of her off-the-court fame and celebrity, which includes guest spots on popular TV shows as well as a reputable modeling career.

But that begs the question. What about the rest of her colleagues? How mainstream are they? According to Leslie, not mainstream enough.

The WNBA fan base, while it continues to grow, is only a small fraction of those who consider themselves to be basketball fans. When FanHouse had a chance to sit down with Leslie at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, we asked the league's unsanctioned ambassador if she believes that David Stern and the National Basketball Association have failed to push the WNBA to a more national level.

Donald Fehr Reportedly Will Be Named New NHLPA Boss

Former Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Donald Fehr is on the verge of being named the new executive director of the NHL Players Association, according to TSN. The report says the official announcement could happen as soon as this weekend.

Fehr ran the baseball union for 26 years, and he will replace Paul Kelly, who was abruptly fired in 2009 and now runs College Hockey, Inc., an organization designed to promote and expand U.S. college hockey.

The appointment doesn't require a full vote of the union membership, but the process was a bit slower than expected because Fehr wanted to get every NHL player's input.

The league and players extended the already-existing collective bargaining agreement through the 2012-13 season, giving Fehr and his staff more time to get settled in before what could be another in a long series of contentious battles between NHL owners and players.

TSN notes that Fehr is considered a popular choice among NHL players.

Speeding Penalty Derails Kevin Harvick's NASCAR Title Run

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Kevin Harvick and his team owner, Richard Childress, were diplomatic in the moments following Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Diplomatic, but not satisfied. Harvick was not happy.

Harvick, who entered the final race in third place in the championship -- 46 points behind Denny Hamlin -- had positioned himself to make a heroic, if unlikely run at his first title, dethroning four-time champ Jimmie Johnson and capitalizing on Hamlin's Sunday afternoon of misfortune.

After racing near the front all day, Harvick exited the pits in first place for a restart on lap 188 of the 267-lap race -- only to be penalized for speeding on pit road (right).

NASCAR said his No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet was too fast entering the pits and he was sent to rear of the lead-lap cars, dropping him back to 29th place. Harvick was understandably livid on the team radio when he received the news and still maintained after the race that he was directly behind a car -- on its bumper -- and therefore couldn't have been speeding.

"I don't think that penalty will ever settle in my stomach,'' Harvick said in a post-race press conference. "When you read me off of my pit road times of 49.6, 49.4 50.8 and then 49.6; and there's only a handful people that get to see them, I won't ever settle for that.

"I don't know how you can be speeding when you're on the bumper in front of you and if the other guy is not speeding. So that's about it. ''

At the same time, Fisher - the Tennessee Titans' head coach - said he's not sure when the veteran tight end who said last week the team's locker room may be divided might return to the lineup.

Scaife, a six-year veteran who had started 11 consecutive games, also had played in 27 consecutive games before being made inactive this past Sunday against Houston, a game the Titans won, 31-17, to snap a six-game losing streak.

Brett Favre might still have a prime-time performance left in him.

Favre, who had previously been ruled out of Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears by the Vikings, is now feeling well enough that he's going to test out his injured shoulder on Monday afternoon. If he feels OK, he'll start at quarterback, a week after the shoulder injury ended his NFL-record streak of 297 consecutive games started.

Officially, the Vikings are listing Favre as questionable.

Favre is perhaps the most durable player in NFL history, so it's no surprise that he's going to try to take the field just two weeks after a significant injury to his throwing shoulder. However, it is a surprise that the Vikings would rule him out if there was a chance he could play -- that could get the team in trouble with the league office, which takes the accuracy of injury reports seriously.

Favre is also a player with a flair for the dramatic -- and a man who loves to be the center of attention -- so it's fitting he wants to get back on the field for a prime-time game against the Bears. Favre says he will retire after the season (and he says this time he really means it), and he surely doesn't want the play when he was injured against the Bills two weeks ago to be the last of his career.

Aztecs in Top 10? Even They Don't Want to Believe It

SAN DIEGO -- As the San Diego State basketball story continues to grow, I have visions of pixie dust descending on the Aztecs. Their burgeoning success feels a bit unreal because there is no framework for it. San Diego State just does not matter in men's basketball. At least, it never did matter to the sport's poll-makers. Until a month ago, in fact, San Diego State had never been ranked in its 90 years of basketball. San Diego State was like Greenland -- large but largely inconspicuous. Here is a big public university in heavily populated Southern California. Yet: 89 years, never ranked.

Now, as if a higher force bestowed powers to make up for those decades, San Diego State is 12-0 and rising in the polls every week. Recent bursts of helium into the SDSU balloon likely will have the Aztecs among the Top 10 when the next polls come out (update: the Aztecs are No. 7 in the latest AP poll). How strange the sight will be: San Diego State with a single digit in front of it. San Diego State near some of the bluest of basketball's blue bloods; Duke, Kansas, Connecticut. Syracuse ... San Diego State.

I wrote three weeks ago that San Diego State is the best team in the West; nonetheless, the idea of SDSU as a national presence remains more concept than reality. It's only December, basketball's version of spring training. That's part of why it doesn't all feel real. It's only December.

Jonathan Babineaux Bests Brother Jordan

SEATTLE -- Jonathan Babineaux spent no small amount of time talking with his brother, Jordan Babineaux, this week.

Jonathan is a defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons. Justin is a safety for the Seattle Seahawks. With the two teams playing each other in Week 16 of the NFL season, there was no small amount of trash talk.

For a while, it seemed as if Jordan would walk away with the family prize. His Seahawks jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and he personally intercepted a pass from Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan to blunt a Falcon drive in the second quarter.

But in the third period, the pendulum swung to Jonathan's side. Atlanta defensive end Jamaal Anderson stripped the ball from Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in the end zone and Jonathan fell on it for a score that broke the back of the Seahawks as the now 12-2 Falcons went on to a 34-18 win.

UConn Women Deserve Same Respect as UCLA Men

The Connecticut women's basketball team is on the verge of history. On Sunday at Madison Square Garden, the Huskies will take the court against Ohio State trying to win their 88th straight game. That would match UCLA's record, the men's basketball team winning 88 in a row between 1971 and 1974. Should they win, they will play to break the record Tuesday in Hartford against Florida State.

Connecticut hasn't lost since the 2008 Final Four. They've won two national titles at the end of two unbeaten seasons.

But so many conversations about the Huskies' accomplishment begin with a preface, a hedge, a "yeah, but ..." Something that makes it clear that what the Huskies are doing shouldn't be compared with what UCLA did, that it's less worthy.

The Huskies are about to win more games in a row than anyone in the history of NCAA college basketball. And we've come to the part where the "merit" of the achievement has to become part of the discussion.

Hendrick Motorsports may have won its fifth-straight championship just last Sunday, but it took only a matter of days for the organization to make some of its biggest changes in years.

"This will improve us as an organization, across the board," team owner Rick Hendrick (right) said Tuesday.

Save for champion Jimmie Johnson, each of the three other drivers in the Hendrick stable will have new crew chiefs for the 2011 season.

Steve Letarte, the crew chief on Jeff Gordon's No. 24 since the end of the 2005 season, will now oversee Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 team. Meanwhile, Gordon will now have Alan Gustafson managing his team in Daytona.

Gustafson leaves the No. 5 team and driver Mark Martin, who will now have Lance McGrew in his ear for the 2011 season. McGrew has spent part of 2009 and all of 2010 as Earnhardt Jr.'s crew chief.

Western Conference Race Off to Crazy Start

Things are starting to sort out a tiny bit in the Western Conference, but the left side of the country is still largely clumped. No one is entirely out of it. No one is ready to start unloading major parts.

"This conference is notoriously tight every year," said longtime Dallas and now Chicago goaltender Marty Turco. "This year, it's gone crazy. No one in is having a bad year, because there's no separation."

In the East, there is a division -- the Atlantic -- where the top team is 32 points ahead of the bottom. In the West, one division going into Thursday had a top-to-bottom difference of four points, the ultra-tight Pacific. The biggest cushion is in the Northwest division, where Vancouver enjoys an 11-point spread over last-place Edmonton. Considering that Vancouver is tied with Colorado at 38 points, the edge over the fifth-place team might not be quite so significant.

The NBA Players Association newsletter sent out last month to all 450 NBA players has eight subheads in all, but it's the first one on the back page that jumped out at this reporter the most.

"2011-12 Lockout."

No question mark at the end of that sentence. No qualifiers such as "Possible 2011-12 Lockout" or even "Likely 2011-12 Lockout." The headline was written with absolute and total certainty that this topic was more reality than mere possibility because, well, it's still looking that way now just as it was back in July.

"As nothing has fundamentally changed in the owners' bargaining position since their initial proposal, we continue to advise that you prepare for a lockout to commence on July 1," the in-house report obtained by FanHouse reads. "More meetings are forthcoming, but we think it is unlikely that any real progress will be made in the coming months. In short, a lockout is just as likely now as it was six months ago."

Billy Mayfair Back to Future at Q School

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- PGA Tour Qualifying School cares little about history.

Last year does not exist. At Q School it's here and now -- or not at all.

Otherwise, there's no way to explain 22-year veteran Billy Mayfair -- five career wins and more than $18 million in earnings -- showing up this week at Orange Country National for the final stage of the annual qualifying process.

Again.

Yeah, Mayfair has gone through the six-round marathon before. Once -- 22 years ago immediately after coming out of Arizona State.

Since then the 1988 U.S. Amateur winner has been one of the PGA Tour's Steady Eddies. After advancing in his only previous trip through qualifying, Mayfair has played 673 PGA Tour events, been in the money 423 times and recorded 69 top 10s.

Mayfair won his first professional tournament in 1993 by beating Mark Calcavecchia and Ted Schulz in a playoff in Milwaukee. He became the only tour player to beat Tiger Woods in a playoff when he took him down in extra holes at the 1998 Nissan Open in Valencia, Calif. He won the 1995 Tour Championship.

And in 2006 he beat testicular cancer.

In September, the Browns (5-8) were expected to play the spoiler role for the month of December against the AFC North, starting with the Bengals (2-11) who were expected to make a serious race to the playoffs. Super Bowl hopes weren't totally out of the question after the acquisition of wide receiver Terrell Owens, the two rookie pass catchers in Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham and a solid defense.

Thanks to Cincy's many poor outings this season, the Browns will have to wait for next week to spoil some playoffs plans.

Other than stats and bonuses, the month of December simply serves as the preseason for both teams. The Bengals have nothing to play for, while the Browns are looking to finish their 2010 campaign with a winning record at 8-8.

Cincinnati leads the all-time series against Cleveland at 38-36 and when they last met on Oct. 3, Browns running back Peyton Hillis pounded the Bengals on the ground as he finished with 102 yards off 27 carries and touchdown in a 23-20 victory -- despite Owens' Bengals coming out party and record-setting day with 10 catches for 222 yards (which moved him into second-place on the NFL's all-time receiving yards list behind Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice).

Heat Can Thank Wizards' Collapse for 12th Straight Win

WASHINGTON -- Zydrunas Ilgauskas sat at his locker, explaining how the Miami Heat managed to win a game it had all but lost. As it turns out, it was quite simple.

"Eighty-two games, that's a long season," he said. "Good teams find a way to win somehow."

But do bad teams sometimes find a way to give games away?

"I didn't say that, you did," he replied.

Ilgauskas was too polite to say it, but how else do you explain the events that turned a would-be feel-good win for the Wizards into another loss -- this one a 95-94 defeat in Washington -- in a now 6-19 campaign. The Wizards coughed up a four-point lead with 17 seconds left, and the way it happened was brutal.

The scene: the Wizards led the entire fourth quarter after Andray Blatche put them up by two with a turnaround fadeaway that beat the third quarter buzzer. The Verizon Center was full (to compare, only 16,500 were on hand with the Lakers in town on Tuesday, most wearing gold and purple) and fans are on their team at least as much as they are booing the Heat.

Rudy Gay Suspended One Game; George Karl, Andre Miller Fined $25K Each

DENVER -- Saturday is a day off for some, but not for NBA discipline czar Stu Jackson.

In separate rulings Saturday, the NBA suspended Memphis forward Rudy Gay for that evening's game at San Antonio due to his flagrant foul twp against Houston's Luis Scola on Friday, and fined Nuggets coach George Karl and Portland guard Andre Miller $25,000 each. Karl was fined for criticizing officiating after Thursday's game against the Spurs and Miller for throwing the ball into the stands Wednesday against Dallas.

Gay will lose $123,670 in salary for his suspension. The incident occurred when Gay made contact with his right shoulder and forearm to the back of Scola midway through the fourth quarter of a 103-87 loss. He was ejected from the game (photo above).

Karl was fined after a 113-112 loss to the Spurs, a game in which a runner by Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony was waved off with four-tenths of a second remaining when Anthony was called for charging into Manu Ginoboli. Karl wasn't that critical of the call, which he said could have gone "either way.'' But Karl did say officials "like to hit us with tough calls,'' and later further alleged a conspiracy regarding how officials treat the Nuggets, specifically center Nene.

Tiger Woods' Chevron World Challenge Offers Final Chance for 2010 Win

The top two golf tours have officially moved into the off-season. So how do you get 18 of the world's best golfers to spend their time off taking part in another tournament? Put together a prize pool of $5 million and guarantee a minimum take home of $150,000. That's exactly what's on the line this week at the Chevron World Challenge in California.

Tiger Woods created this tournament in 1999 to benefit his Tiger Woods Foundation, and this will be the first time in three years that he has taken part. Knee surgery kept him out in 2008 and injuries from his car accident sidelined him a year ago. Although it won't count as an official tour victory, a win this week would keep Tiger from being shutout in 2010. Sherwood Country Club gives him as good a chance as any course. He is a four-time winner and three-time runner up in the 11-year history of this event.

Tiger enters the week as the highest ranked player in the field with Lee Westwood not participating. World No. 3 Martin Kaymer also decided to stay home following his European Tour championship last week in Dubai -- but five of his tour competitors have made the long trek from Europe, including a couple of his Ryder Cup teammates. Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter caught a 16.5-hour direct flight to Los Angeles shortly after the Dubai World Championship ended.

Jet lag might be the only thing that can slow down Poulter right now, although his busy travel schedule doesn't seem to be having any negative effects. The Englishman was a playoff away at Dubai from entering this tournament coming off back-to-back wins. He said last week that he has felt very comfortable on the course and it's showing.

Villanova, Rowan Football Players Get in the Game, Save Lives

A 2-year-old girl and a 59-year-old man, and their families, will have a happy holiday season because of the sacrifice made by a pair of young men who, as of Wednesday, neither had met.

That the two young men responsible happen to both be star football players at small colleges located less than an hour apart (across the Schuylkill River separating Pennsylvania and New Jersey), who grew up about two hours apart in south Jersey, is almost a complete coincidence.

The odds against it happening are hard to calculate, and incredibly long.

Yet, it is not a complete coincidence that the infant girl and the older man -- both of whom suffer from a form of leukemia and received bone-marrow transplants within a recent six-month span -- were given new leases on life from the two players: Villanova senior wide receiver Matt Szczur and Rowan senior defensive end Matt Hoffman, respectively.

Szczur and Hoffman became donors either directly or indirectly through the efforts of Villanova coach Andy Talley, who has spent nearly two decades spearheading bone-marrow donation campaigns in the Philadelphia area, and who started a program for college football teams, called "Get in the Game, Save a Life,'' two years ago.

"He's done a wonderful job promoting that, not just at our school, but at other schools,'' Szczur (pronounced SEE-zur) said this week, as the defending FCS champion Wildcats prepared for Friday's national semifinal at Eastern Washington.

Former Razorback Carlton Salters Now Chasing Baseball Dream

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Carlton Salters was thankful for the opportunities and memories, but he had come to the realization that a career in football probably wasn't in his future. Salters appeared in 27 games primarily in a reserve role over three seasons at Arkansas and had grown tired of the sport.

It was late July when Salters, who was preparing for his senior season with the Razorbacks, saw the announcement in the local newspaper: The Kansas City Royals were holding an open tryout camp in Springdale, Ark., home to the organization's Double-A minor league team and a 20-minute drive from Fayetteville.

Salters played baseball in high school, was an outfielder during his redshirt season for the Razorbacks in 2007 and often thought of returning to the diamond. But that's as far as Salters had taken it until he saw the Royals announcement.

It was a Tuesday and the Royals' tryout was that upcoming Friday, three days away. And, by the way, Salters hadn't picked up a baseball or a bat in three years, let alone three days, and who knows where he had placed his cleats.

No problem, sort of.

"I was nervous because I hadn't hit live pitching in three years but I told myself, 'You know what?' Natural ability was going to have to take over for me," Salters told FanHouse. "And it did, it really did. I went to the tryout and things took off from there."

That they did.

Bob Feller's Brainstorm Helped Pave Way for Baseball Integration

Just before the 1946 World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals started early that October, what would prove to be a historically more significant baseball tournament opened in Pittsburgh. It featured competing teams of all-stars. One was from the all-white major leagues. The other was from the Negro Leagues, where white baseball men forced the relegation of black players after instituting an unwritten racist policy over half a century earlier.

The black vs. white all-star tournament was the idea of star major league pitcher Bob Feller.

In the immediate wake of his death Wednesday at 92, Feller was remembered for a lot of things, most notably being the hardest-throwing pitcher anyone had ever seen and for being the first major leaguer to volunteer for the armed services after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He missed four seasons as a gun captain aboard the Alabama, where he earned eight medals.

But what I thought was most remarkable about him was his brainstorm to provide an opportunity to a generation of athletes who hadn't been allowed to prove themselves simply because of the color of their skin.

"It [Feller's all-star tournament] kind of helped convince people that the Negro Leagues' players were as good as the major league players, but that they needed to be given a fair shot," the baseball historian John Sickels -- who six years ago wrote the most-recent biography of Feller, Bob Feller: Ace of The Greatest Generation -- told me Thursday evening.

Indeed, Sickels noted that the first contest on Sept. 30, 1946, between Feller's side and one comprised by legendary black pitcher Satchel Paige ended with the white team on the short end of a 3-1 score.

How many more games were played between the white all-stars and black all-stars, and which side won, was not well documented. It was a barnstorming tour. They played doubleheaders. They may have played more than 20 games or as few as 11. The white all-stars by one account won 17 games and by another count won just seven games against six victories by the black all-stars.

There was some troubling news from San Francisco last week when Macy's fired a veteran Santa Claus after an older couple complained he told them a joke that was "inappropriate."

The San Francisco Chronicle reported John Toomey, 68, who had been Santa the past 20 years at the Macy's in Union Square, was terminated because of objections from an older woman and her husband.

"When I ask the older people who sit on my lap if they've been good and they say, 'Yes,' I say, 'Gee, that's too bad,' " Toomey told the Chronicle. "Then, if they ask why Santa is so jolly, I joke that it's because I know where all the naughty boys and girls live."

That's it? Firing Santa Claus for telling a bad joke? Thankfully, McMurphy's Picks don't have those same standards or I would have been gone a long time ago.

It's official: The Minnesota Vikings will play an outdoor home game for the first time in 29 years on Monday night.

The NFL issued a press release Friday announcing that the Vikings' game versus the Bears Monday will be played at TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota. The venue changed because of damage to the Metrodome roof, but the time is the same: Monday night at 8:30 p.m. ET. If you're going, expect to freeze -- temperatures are not expected to climb out of the 20s in the Minneapolis area Monday, and snow showers are possible.

The names in the A's new lineup don't inspire much awe. Their three big acquisitions so far this winter have combined for a total of two All-Star appearances, and none since 2004. It's hard to look at their lineup in a vacuum and think they are going to be even a "good" offensive team.

Good, however, is a relative term. They are absolutely going to be better than they were last year.

Now that they've put Josh Willingham into their lineup as the left fielder, along with Hideki Matsui at DH and David DeJesus in right, the A's have made an eye-opening improvement at one-third of their lineup spots.

Mike Haywood Will Be Named New Football Coach at Pitt

Mike Haywood, currently the coach at Miami (OH), will be the next football coach at Pittsburgh. Haywood confirmed the move to Graham Watson of FanHouse on Thursday night.

Haywood's move was first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Haywood was brought to the Pitt campus for a second interview and met with the chancellor and several other high-ranking University officials, the report stated. He is expected to be named the new coach as early as Thursday.

Haywood took over the Miami program in 2009 following a 2-10 campaign for the RedHawks. Haywood went 1-11 in his first season, which was his first as a head coach.

In 2010, however, Haywood led one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation. Miami is 9-4 and won the MAC championship over favored Northern Illinois. The RedHawks are headed to the GoDaddy.com Bowl to square off against Middle Tennessee Jan. 6.

Before taking the Miami job, Haywood was one of the offensive assistants under Charlie Weis at Notre Dame, where he was once a wide receiver.

The 46-year-old will be taking over at Pitt for Dave Wannstedt, who resigned from the position Dec. 7.

Jesse Crain, White Sox Have 3-Year Deal

The Chicago White Sox and reliever Jesse Crain have agreed to terms on a three-year deal, according to MLB.com's Peter Gammons.

The total value of Crain's deal is approximately $13 million, reported FOXSports.com Wednesday night.

Crain, a right-hander, has spent the past seven seasons with the division rival Minnesota Twins, almost all of them in middle relief. He has just three career saves.

He went 1-1 over 64 innings last season with a 3.04 ERA. The latter mark was his lowest in the ERA department over a full season since 2005, his first in the big leagues.

Pedro Feliciano, Yankees Reportedly Closing In on Agreement

The New York Yankees are getting close to signing left-handed relief pitcher Pedro Feliciano, according to the Bergen Record.

Feliciano declined an arbitration offer from the New York Mets in November and has garnered interest from the Red Sox and the Phillies, not to mention the Yankees now that he's entered free agency.

The Yankees may have decided to push harder to obtain the services of the 34-year-old Feliciano since divisional rival Boston has five potential left-handed bats in their lineup and since they have officially missed out on Cliff Lee.

Feliciano appeared in 92 games last season, throwing 62 2/3 innings and striking out 56 batters. He posted a 3.30 ERA and has been a workhorse for the Mets, making more appearances than any pitcher in baseball over the last three seasons.

Bob Feller, Hall of Fame Pitcher, Dies at 92

Bob Feller, the longest tenured living Baseball Hall of Famer, died Wednesday night following a bout with leukemia. He was 92.

Feller had struggled in recent years with his health and had been undergoing treatment for his leukemia since August 2010. He was recently moved into hospice care.

Feller, known by the nicknames "Rapid Robert" and "Bullet Bob," made his major league debut as a 17-year-old in 1936, after scout Cy Slapnicka signed him for $1 and an autographed baseball off his family's farm in Van Meter, Iowa.

Feller never threw one pitch in the minor leagues and spent his entire career, which spanned 18 seasons, with the Cleveland Indians.

Andrew Bynum Returns From Injury, Effective in 'Relief' Role

WASHINGTON -- Andrew Bynum did not set the world on fire in his return on Tuesday, which is OK. He didn't start and he didn't play a ton, but he looked good in limited minutes and he helped the Lakers. It was an encouraging start.

Bynum finished with seven points, four rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes. But more important was that he moved relatively well, got to the free-throw line four times and made an impact on defense.

It'll be a while before he comes close to matching the career-high 30 minutes a game he averaged last season -- Bynum estimates four weeks until he's back to normal -- but he's filling a much-needed role for the Lakers' front-court rotation.

"Short minutes, relief minutes," is what Lakers coach Phil Jackson said to expect from the center.

With his size and talent, even a rusty Bynum immediately shores up the Lakers' front-court rotation and provides a respite for Pau Gasol, who is averaging a career high 39:17 minutes per game.

LAS VEGAS -- In a luxury suite in the Bellagio Hotel high above the Las Vegas strip, Jimmie Johnson was all smiles and "aw shucks" on the eve of collecting an unprecedented fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship trophy. He was at the hotel to meet with a small group of reporters and to unveil the true benchmark of an athlete's success.

Forget the historic five NASCAR titles, Johnson now has a video game named after him: "Jimmie Johnson's Anything With an Engine."

The game doesn't go on sale until 2011, but the concept launch this week meant the vivid collision between two of America's favorite pastimes, video gaming and NASCAR. And it was interesting to observe the hip, young gaming reporters, dressed in black adorned with lots of zippers and skull designs and colorful tattoos, sizing up the NASCAR All-American good guy's entry into their eclectic world.

"So how does it feel to be a legend?'' asked Jon Carnage, a former professional wrestler who is now a reporter from the video game blog Destructoid. He clearly caught the humble Johnson off guard.

"It's still strange to me that I hear that,'' Johnson replied.

Perhaps he should get used to it.

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- Veteran Billy Mayfair won the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament Monday. That's good. Joseph Bramlett finished seven shots back and tied for 16th. Maybe, even better.

That's how Q School, golf's six-day, 108-hole coming-of-age event, works. Nobody really wins qualifying. Success is achieved by surviving -- that means finishing among the top 25 and ties -- to play in next season's PGA Tour.

"Yeah, this is about as good as it can get right now," Bramlett said. "You always play to win, but just getting that tour card is winning."

For more reasons than the obvious.

Bramlett, 22 and fresh out of Stanford, will bring more than a promising game and high hopes to the 2011 PGA Tour season. He'll bring a little more color.

NEW YORK - It's interesting. You can put athletic administrators from across the country in the same building and they seem to disagree on just about every burning issue in intercollegiate athletics.

Conference realignment. A football playoff versus the bowl system. The number of years of eligibility a student-athlete should be allowed. How to ensure student-athletes graduate. You name it, there is a rarely a consensus in the room.

But when the subject of paying intercollegiate student-athletes as coaches contracts become bigger and television revenues reach once unimaginable levels, there is finally an agreement: That is never going to happen.

In fact, NCAA president Mark Emmert (right) set the tone of this week's IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum when during his opening remarks he professed, "As long I am president of the NCAA, we will not pay student-athletes."

That seemed to be the sentiment of all of the administrators who attended the forum that did not include student-athletes.

Marcos Ambrose, NASCAR's Aussie driver, did not let a mid-season surge in futility by Elliott Sadler deter him from capturing the season 'championship' in yellow-flag crashes and spins.

Coming on strong during the final eight races with seven spins or crashes, including a final spin (at right) during the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Ambrose easily outdistanced the competition in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series to post a season-leading 19 incidents and win the title by two.

Sadler, meanwhile, found uncommon consistency in the final stretch, chalking up only a single yellow flag in an incident at Martinsville Speedway during the last eight races. That brought his season total to 15, a number easily surpassed not only by Ambrose, but by hard-luck Sam Hornish Jr., who reached the second-highest total of 17 after the misfortune of four more incidents in the final eight races, including two in the Martinsville race.

Kyle Busch and Joey Logano were tied for fourth in our exclusive FanHouse crash and spin roundup, with 14 incidents apiece.

Drivers involved in 13 spins or crashes in the 36-race schedule, or one every three races, were Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski and Juan Pablo Montoya.

In our tally, we count an incident on a driver's tally if his car is listed as being involved in a spin or a crash that brings out a yellow flag. Caution periods caused by stalled cars, engine failures or debris do not count, unless a spin or crash was involved and a car number listed.

Dana Holgorsen Reportedly Headed to West Virginia as Coach-In-Waiting

Dana Holgorsen, Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator, will reportedly be leaving the school after one season to take the same post at West Virginia before becoming the head coach there.

According to reports, Holgorsen will be West Virginia's offensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting in 2011 before taking over for Bill Stewart in 2012. Holgorsen will reportedly get a six-year deal, with a term of five years as head coach.

The rest of the West Virginia staff will be retained in 2011, according to reports, while current coordinator Jeff Mullen is in limbo, waiting to hear whether he gets the head coaching job at Kent State.

In his first season with the Cowboys, Holgorsen led the nation's top-ranked offense with 538 yards per game. West Virginia, meanwhile, finished No. 64 with 377 yards per game. The Mountaineers finished this season 9-3 (5-2) and will be playing N.C. State in the 2010 Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 28.

First-Place Dallas Stars Meet Pacific Division's Usual Leader

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The last time Dallas faced the Sharks, it turned out to be the Stars' most important game of the year, according to right wing Adam Burish.

The Stars came back from two goals down to beat San Jose 5-4 last month, and the win helped the upstart Dallas team believe in themselves even more strongly.

"That San Jose game was the biggest one of all because now we know we can come back from two down," Burish told FanHouse on Monday after the team's morning skate. "I keep going back to that game, because that was a big story."

Stars coach Marc Crawford agreed, and he said one reason that that game was so key was that it helped Mike Ribiero, who opened the season in a real slump, get going. He scored his first two goals of the season, including the game-winner.

Latest Texans Letdown May Have Sealed Gary Kubiak's Fate

HOUSTON -- Throw 62 passes in a game and one of them is bound to be a really bad one.

Unfortunately for Matt Schaub and the Houston Texans, that regretful toss came in overtime, after a thrilling 21-point comeback, and landed in the arms of Baltimore cornerback Josh Wilson, who walked into the end zone for a 12-yard interception return and 34-28 victory for the Ravens, ending Monday night's roller-coaster ride at Reliant Stadium.

Chalk up another season of frustration and exasperation for the Texans (5-8), who fell three games behind the Jacksonville Jaguars and two back of the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South standings. This was supposed to be the year the expansion franchise born in 2002 -- coming off its first winning season -- finally got off the postseason snide.

"We had a different plan of how this season was going to go," Schaub said after passing for 393 yards against the Ravens before his fatal throw. "It wasn't exactly like this."

"It's been heartbreaking week-in and week-out," linebacker Brian Cushing said after a rare solid performance from the Houston defense went wasted. "I don't really have much to say."

The Texans are likely headed for a massive makeover, with owner Bob McNair having two words to say to coach Gary Kubiak: "You're fired."

From Any Angle, Phillies Big Winners With Cliff Lee

Anyone remember the San Francisco Giants?

You know, the guys in orange and black loaded with pitching and personality. They beat the Phillies only two months ago in the National League Championship Series. They beat up on Cliff Lee in the World Series.

Our West Coast dudes are reigning World Series champions. No matter how many millions of dollars the Phillies or the Red Sox spend on ballplayers this offseason, nothing is decided in December.

True, when the Phillies and ace Cliff Lee reached terms Monday, the phrase embarrassment of riches applied.

"Best pitching staff in the game!" Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers texted in reply to FanHouse after Lee, a bona fide ace, joined a rotation that already boasted Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt.

When asked about Lee later on Tuesday, an NL East scout pondered the next few Octobers, and sounded resigned to the prospect of seeing a shade of red too familiar. "You would have to think the Phillies would get close to the World Series for two or three more years," he said

Their four pursuers appearing largely incapable of denying them a fifth consecutive NL East title, the Phillies may have more reason to fear an invisible foe. There's age creep on their roster, even with Domonic Brown, 23, penciled into right field as the replacement to Jayson Werth. Father Time always wins--eventually. The four aces have a lot of mileage on their arms. Our scout doesn't see any blinking yellow lights among them, though.

"Halladay is in the prime of his career," he said of the 33-year-old true ace, who won the Cy Young award this year and threw two no-hitters, including a perfect game.

"Lee is a young 32 and is just hitting his stride. Hamels is 26 and is really good. The only guy I saw last year who really wasn't himself was Oswalt (33). I don't know if it was from pitching in the World Baseball Classic the previous year, or pitching for a bad team. But he looked fine after he went to the Phillies."

Among Philadelphia's everyday players is only slight evidence of decline, although many of them are past the typical peak years. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins is 32 and coming off an injury-marred season, as is second baseman Chase Utley, who will turn 32 on Friday, but both still command respect from opponents. The team's top slugger, Ryan Howard, is 31. Left fielder Raul Ibanez is 38.

"The left fielder is getting old," the scout said. "Are the Phillies getting old? Nah."

My still-fresh memory of the Phillies, though, is of Giants pitchers making their bats look slow.

Erica Blasberg's Doctor Pleads Guilty in Suicide Case

Thomas Hess, a Las Vegas physician, has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of justice in the suicide of Erica Blasberg.

According to reports, Hess admitted to removing a suicide note and prescription medications from Blasberg's home before police showed up to investigate, wanting to spare her family the supposed embarrassment of a suicide.

Hess was sentenced to one year probation and 40 hours of community service.

Blasberg, a 25-year-old who joined the LPGA Tour in 2005, was found on May 9 with a plastic bag over her head. Hess made the 911 call to police.

Blasberg's parents initially expressed skepticism that the cause of death was suicide. On May 10 Erica's father, Mel Blasberg, said, "At first glance it looks like she might have taken her own life, but at second glance, something is very, very strange about it. We're waiting for the police to make an investigation."

Four days after Blasberg was found dead, police raided the office and home of Hess in search of "small blue oval pills in a 30 package blister pack," as well as a specific type of trash bag. The same type of pill package and trash bag were found in Blasberg's residence. Blasberg's parents said she had been taking Xanax for anxiety.

In August the Clark County coroner's office ruled that Blasberg's death a suicide. Asphyxia was cited as the primary cause of her death and the presence of prescription drugs in her system was also cited as a "significant factor in her death." Police issued a misdemeanor arrest warrant for Hess on obstruction charges and he turned himself in days later.

On Wednesday, Mel Blasberg told KTNV, ABC's Las Vegas affiliate, that Hess was partly responsible for Erica's death.

"I felt that the verdict was insignificant," Mel Blasberg said. "I think the way Dr. Hess acted and didn't act is partly responsible for Erica's death. But I was looking for some remorse."

In August, Mel Blasberg told ABC News, "He's central to Erica's death in terms of being there before she died, and their relationship clearly went beyond doctor-patient." He also said he believed Hess was being less than forthcoming about what happened the weekend of Erica's death because of his "inappropriate relationship" with her.

Hideki Matsui, A's Agree to 1-Year Contract

The A's finally landed a free agent Tuesday, signing designated hitter Hideki Matsui to a one-year deal.

Matsui will make $4.25 million plus possible incentives for Oakland -- a notable cut from the $6 million he made in putting together a solid season as the Angels' DH in 2010. The 36-year-old hit .271 with 21 homers, 84 RBI and an .820 OPS in Anaheim before diving back into free agency.

Matsui was set to be introduced at a press conference in Oakland on Tuesday.

The A's previously made bids for Lance Berkman, who signed with St. Louis, and Adrian Beltre, who remains a free agent in search of greener pastures.

Matsui reportedly enjoyed life on the West Coast after a seven-year stint with the Yankees from 2003-09 and should provide a much-needed boost for Oakland's offense.

Saints Focused on Clinching Playoff Berth This Weekend Despite the Weather

The Saints (10-3) can clinch at least a playoff wild card spot on Sunday if they can beat the Baltimore Ravens and the Green Bay Packers lose at New England and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lose at home to the Detroit Lions.

That is a tough task. The Saints will go into Baltimore to play a veteran team and the weather conditions will be much different than the Louisiana Superdome. Temperatures will be in the 30s and could produce a wintry mix that could affect the pass-heavy New Orleans offense.

The Saints have won six straight, which has included a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are also an AFC North team. That game, however, was played within the cozy confines of the Superdome.

The Ravens certainly have much more experience playing in cold weather conditions. The Saints played at Cincinnati on Dec. 5 in chilly weather and won, 34-30.

"I think we are a team that can handle either playing inside or outside," said Saints coach Sean Payton. "I think that we are a team that is battle tested and we have been able to handle the elements whether it's been wind or cold weather. I think we look more closely at travel logistics in regards to Thursday games or Monday games then we do weather games.

Landon Donovan Rumored For Newcastle Loan

The rumors surrounding Landon Donovan's offseason excursions took a twist Sunday when the British tabloid Sunday Sun reported the U.S. all-time leading scorer has been offered to Newcastle.

The report, of course, must be taken with a grain of salt, especially when considering that Donovan told Goal.com he would only consider a loan during the MLS offseason if it was to Everton, where he earned rave reviews for a three-month stint last year.

Following unsuccessful spells earlier in his career with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, Donovan's European value skyrocketed during the past year, when he impressed with Everton and bagged three goals at the World Cup.

Everton manager David Moyes has not been shy about his admiration of Donovan, and the struggling Toffees could certainly use him to help steer clear of the relegation zone.

Newcastle, meanwhile, could be looking at Donovan as a replacement for winger Hatem Ben Arfa, whose leg was broken in October by -- who else? -- infamously violent Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong.

Satchel Paige was one of the most dominant pitchers in the Negro Leagues, and later starred in the majors.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- I couldn't find the glove.

Where was the glove?

Before leaving Atlanta, James "Red" Moore (no relation) told me to look for his old first baseman's glove when I got to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Said Mary Moore of her 94-year-old husband, who is among the fewer than 130 players left from the leagues, "Oh, lordy, Jesus, we promised the glove to them, and we went on and gave it to them. Yeah, and it's the only thing we really had left from back then."

So, moments after I walked into the museum, I searched from exhibit to exhibit, but the glove wasn't there.

The doomsayers are correct, I thought. They swear on a stack of Josh Gibson trading cards that since the death of baseball saint Buck O'Neil four years ago, his obsession inside of Kansas City's 18th & Vine district was going, going, nearly gone.

The 912 players in the big leagues before rosters expanded in September averaged $3,014,572, the Major League Baseball Players Association said Monday. The average rose 0.6 percent from last year's $2,996,106, the smallest increase since a 2.5 percent drop in 2004.

The union's opening-day average first reached $3 million in 2007, but the average drops during the season as veterans are released and replaced by younger players earning far less. The union's average at the start of this season was $3,340,133.

The New York Yankees had the highest final average at $7,604,937, down slightly from $7,663,351 when they won the World Series in 2009. Philadelphia rose from eighth to second at $5,662,551.

Boston ($4,821,016) remained third, and the Chicago White Sox ($4,580,868) climbed from 12th to fourth followed by the Chicago Cubs ($4,107,304), who dropped from second. Houston ($1,931,793) slid from 11th to 22nd.

As Playoffs Draw Nearer, It's Patriots, Falcons and Unpredictability

It's official. In the weekly quest to identify the "best'' team in the NFL, every media outlet and every blogger now has tabbed New England. That's true in official terms, too, if you consider that the Patriots are the first team to clinch a playoff spot.

But let's just remember what happened to the Patriots in the Super Bowl three years ago -- although this season, they don't have the burden of entering the playoffs unbeaten.

With three weeks to go in the regular season, it might finally be time to identify the real contenders (the Patriots at the top, quite obviously) and dismiss the pretenders (clearly, the Jets). But it's also time to add the qualifier that in 2007, the Giants, at this point, were a 9-4 team slated to end up as a wild-card playoff entry; and that in 2005, Pittsburgh was 8-5, slated to finish behind Cincinnati in the AFC North.

Both the Giants and Steelers finished as champions, the New Yorkers preventing New England from becoming the first 19-0 team in NFL history with that historic upset in Arizona. Like the Steelers two years earlier, they won three road games as a wild card before winning the title -- Pittsburgh's big pre-Super Bowl win was a wacky upset in Indianapolis marked by a botched replay and a Ben Roethlisberger desperation tackle against a Colts team that had dominated the regular season.

LaRon Landry was Washington's first half MVP and made several midseason All-Pro teams. But Landry hasn't played since Week 10 and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that the strong safety has been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

So Landry, the sixth pick in the 2007 draft who was finally flourishing in new coordinator Jim Haslett's defense after two-plus years out of position at free safety, finishes with 85 tackles -- just 10 shy of his career-high -- despite playing in just nine games. Landry also had a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble. The only other Redskin with a play in all those areas is Pro Bowl inside linebacker London Fletcher, the team's top tackler.

Washington, 4-5 with Landry in the lineup, is 1-3 without him. Fifth-year man Reed Doughty will continue to start in his place. Landry, who missed just one games during his previous three seasons, joins backup safeties Chris Horton and Anderson Russell on injured reserve.

Most, but not all, was lost for Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert last summer when LeBron James spurned the team and took his talents to South Beach.

Forbes released figures this week showing James was the most underpaid player in the NBA last year, making $15.8 million a year. In the report, Forbes used players' salaries from 2009-10 and juxtaposed individual statistics alongside how many wins the team produced in the season. Specifically factoring into the report was sports economist David Berri's statistical formula that uses the following for each player: points, rebounds, turnovers, steals, assists and shooting percentages per team possessions in a game

Last Friday, I managed the impossible, I drove to Atlanta without my laptop. Which is basically the worst nightmare of anyone who makes a living writing on that laptop. Then, at the exact moment I realized I'd forgotten that laptop, I pulled up at the gas station on top of Monteagle Mountain and drove off with the gas pump still affixed to my car.

You haven't lived until you've looked out your window and seen the gas pump flapping wildly outside your window like a fish struggling to breathe. Some people have asked, how did you manage to drive off with the gas pump still affixed to your car? Well, the answer is easy. The gas station doubled as a McDonald's and I was trying to get to Atlanta in time for my radio show.

So while I was pumping gas, I went into the McDonald's and ordered a chicken biscuit. While I waited, I read Jim Delany's attack on Cam Newton on my iPhone. I came back outside, climbed into my car, sat there for a moment thinking, "Should I re-tweet this Delany article," and while I was thinking that, I drove off.

Only, you guessed it, the gas pump was still attached to my car.

Even NBA fans can shoot better than the Cleveland Cavaliers these days.

The woeful Cavaliers lost in Oklahoma Sunday night, 106-77, and to add insult to awfulness, they were outdone by the OKC fans.

Well, one fan actually. Robert Yanders, draped in a blue Thunder T-shirt, drilled a half court shot between the first and second period, earning a $20,000 prize, courtesy of MidFirst Bank.

OKC fans' field-goal percentage on the night: 1-for-1, (100 percent).

Cleveland Cavaliers: 25-for-77, (33.8 percent).

In all seriousness, however, the Cavaliers are struggling. They're 1-9 in their last 10 games, and are 7-17 overall. They also can't fill in the scoring gap left by some guy who wears No. 6 and plays for the Heat. The Cavs are 27th in the league in scoring at 93.91 points per game.

Maybe they should start recruiting players from road teams' arenas.

The NBA is in the advanced stages of a plan to purchase the New Orleans Hornets from George Shinn until a new owner can be secured, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.

The source told FanHouse on Friday that they were under the impression this unprecedented transfer would be "coming down soon" and that the NBA had already pegged individuals who would run the franchise temporarily. On Sunday, the source confirmed an SI.com report that Jac Sperling, a vice chariman of the NHL's Minnesota Wild and New Orleans native who is also a sports attorney, would run the organization.

And once again, the future of basketball down on the Bayou is in question.

Bears Snowed Under by Patriots but Still on Top of NFC North

CHICAGO -- What do the Chicago Bears and the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome have in common? Answer: they both were deflated this weekend.

While heavy snow caused the Metrodome roof to break apart early Sunday morning, about 10 hours later and 410 miles to the southeast, the Bears looked as if they had never played in snow before, as they were trounced by the New England Patriots, 36-7.

"We were beaten by a good football team today," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "They dominated us in all three phases (of the game."

Indeed, New England racked up nearly 500 yards in total offense, while the Bears didn't even muster 200 yards. Chicago coughed up the ball four times; New England none. Even the wind didn't bother New England as Shayne Graham kicked three field goals, while Chicago kicker Robbie Gould didn't even get one attempt all game.

While Minnesota, the Dakotas and parts of northwestern Wisconsin were pummeled with up to 20 inches of snow, Chicago had a relative dusting of maybe a couple inches. And even though the temperatures produced a sub-zero wind chill factor along the shores of Lake Michigan -- which heretofore has typically been referred to as "Bears weather" -- the Bears can't blame the conditions for their embarrassing performance.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- While the Yankees and Red Sox try to buy another World Series trophy, familiar practices are also at work in the sunny, popular division where the 2010 World Series trophy resides.

The National League West is still defined by its pitching and the arms-and-glove race it inspires, said the man whose pitchers delivered the World Series trophy to San Francisco just a month ago.

Surveying recent personnel moves within the West, Giants manager Bruce Bochy sees improved pitching staffs in Phoenix and Los Angeles and reasons to believe San Diego again will turn foes' bats into balsa sticks.

"What we're seeing this offseason in our division is what we've seen in the last few years," Bochy said from the Winter Meetings. "And that's trying to improve our pitching, both our bullpens and starting rotations. And our defense."

The renovations amount to attempting to keep up with not the Joneses, but the Lincecums, Jimenezes, Cains, Wilsons, Kershaws, Bells and Latoses.

"You've got to pitch, and catch the ball," said Padres manager Bud Black, a former pitcher and pitching coach.

Twenty years ago, when I started covering NASCAR stock car racing, the sanctioning body's public relations staff consisted almost exclusively of one man who ran 'his' media centers in the same dictatorial manner that his boss, the late Bill France Jr., ran NASCAR.

That PR guy is now doing hard time in prison, but that's another story. Today, the many-tentacled NASCAR public relations operation is a media bureaucracy -- an endlessly churning mill of facts, figures, videos, press conferences, photos and other information and content.

In their efficiency and zeal, bless their hearts, the PR folks at NASCAR have informed us exactly which five of the season's 36 Sprint Cup races were the best of the year. Although I don't agree with all the choices -- I think the race in Texas last month was one of the best races I've seen in years -- NASCAR says these five were selected "from discussions with the national series director, competition department and NASCAR PR managers."

With a scorched earth assault on the school record book, Boise State junior quarterback Kellen Moore has rendered the phrase "prototype quarterback" meaningless.

While he joins a pair of first-glance NFL quarterback bodies at Saturday's Heisman Trophy award ceremony in New York City, people will probably begin wondering where Boise State's famous passer is as they ask who allowed the "Leave it to Beaver" stand-in on stage.

Checking in at 6-foot-flat and 187 pounds, Moore gives off the appearance of a slot receiver or a kicker - not the team's star quarterback. It's for that same reason that Moore, who obliterated Washington state high school's passing records, wasn't offered a scholarship by any nearby Pac-10 school.

"Trust me, everybody in the Pac10 wishes they had Kellen right now," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "I don't know why they didn't take a chance on him."

Closer Look at Hassan Whiteside's D-League Struggles

Hassan Whiteside was sent by the Sacramento Kings to their NBA D-League affiliate Reno Bighorns to get the much-needed playing time that was unavailable with the Kings, but the 7-foot rookie has also struggled to find time with the Bighorns.

Whiteside, the 33rd overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, has played four games with the Bighorns, but has yet to make an impact in the D-League, averaging just 5.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in just over 12 minutes of action per game.

The most interesting box score line for Whiteside thus far in his D-League career came Friday night against fellow rookie Patrick Patterson and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Before fouling out in his 12:59 of court time, Whiteside stuffed the stat sheet by scoring six points, grabbing six rebounds and adding five blocked shots while Kings teammate DeMarcus Cousins watched courtside. Whiteside's Bighorns did get the victory, though, edging the Rio Grande Valley Vipers by a final score of 119-111 behind a triple-double from Patrick Ewing, Jr. as he'd score 26 points, dish 11 assists and grab 10 rebounds in 41 minutes.

Whiteside's minutes were limited was due to foul trouble, though the rookie showed that he still has a lot to work on despite the obvious athletic gifts that allowed him to turn pro after just one season at Marshall. Eric Musselman, the first-year head coach of the Bighorns and former Kings head coach, told FanHouse earlier this week that Whiteside is healthy and improving every day, however, leading to this in-depth look at the center's most recent game.

Whiteside doesn't start for the Bighorns as their center position is currently locked up by Nick Fazekas, the 34th overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft and the first overall pick of this year's D-League draft. Nevertheless, Whiteside gets plenty of chances at playing time as the first big man off the bench, checking in at 4:30 of the first quarter Friday night.

On Whiteside's first possession of the game, he grabbed an errant Marcus Landry shot, but was fouled on the putback attempt and forced to go to the free-throw line. Whiteside made 59 percent of his attempts from the charity stripe in college, but bricked his first two attempts of this game. Landry by the way, the brother of Kings forward Carl Landry, would finish with a team-high 30 points after hitting on 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc.

General Motors to Reportedly Return to Golf Sponsorship

General Motors will begin sponsoring golf tournaments again, according to a report.

The automaker plans to announce that Cadillac will sponsor the World Golf Championship, and is trying to bring a PGA Tour event back to Michigan after cutting ties with the Buick Open, which took place in Flint, Mich. GM has already confirmed that they will return to the Super Bowl in 2011 after halting advertisement in recent years.

GM was a prominent sponsor in the sports world but had to scale back in the wake of the company's bankruptcy. It once had been the longest-standing corporate sponsor on the PGA Tour, with its name on four tournaments.

In November, GM captured a $23.1 billion initial public stock offering that allowed the U.S. government to lessen its stake in the company. The company made $4.2 billion through the first three quarters of this year, returning to profitability after reducing to just four brands.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Only 25 laps into Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR season finale, Denny Hamlin realized his day was going to be long, and his hopes of holding off his two championship challengers diminished as the hot South Florida afternoon wore on.

When the green flag dropped, his 15-point championship lead over four-time defending Sprint Cup series champ Jimmie Johnson technically vanished, based on Hamlin's 38th-place starting position compared to Johnson's sixth.

Then on lap 25, Hamlin collided with Greg Biffle, sending Hamlin's No. 11 FedEx Toyota spinning on the infield grass -- an omen for what would come. Tire problems, pit road miscommunication and then an ill-timed caution period late in the race spelled his ultimate doom. The 30-year-old driver finished 14th in the race and became the first driver in NASCAR's seven-year Chase playoff format not to win the title when leading the championship with one race remaining.

"It's tough, trust me, these years don't come by too often in anyone's career,'' said Hamlin, who finished championship runner-up, 39 points behind the newly crowned five-time champion Johnson.

"I was privileged enough to be part of the closest championship in (Chase) history and give it my best effort, but it wasn't enough today. Our car got banged up and we just couldn't overcome it.''

Spotter's Stand: Carl Edwards Has Offseason Momentum in His Back Pocket

He may have won the two races that dole out the least amount of recognition of the entire season, but Carl Edwards doesn't much care.

"For our team, to finish like this and to be on the upswing that we are, this is as good as it gets," Edwards said after winning Sunday at Homestead, his second in a row.

Of course, Edwards was overshadowed by an incredibly dramatic championship fight that he watched from the outside looking in Sunday, largely in his rear-view mirror.

Jimmie Johnson overcame Denny Hamlin and held off Kevin Harvick to win the 2010 title, and proceeded to spin through a burnout as Edwards celebrated with his traditional backflip.

"I tell you, it's a lot more frustrating to not be in victory lane and watching somebody out there doing their donuts and all that stuff," Edwards said.

Behind impressive rookie center Logan Couture, the San Jose Sharks upset the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on the road Monday night. Couture notched his second two-goal game in three contests, as he leads all rookies with 12 goals on the season.

And the young rook doesn't seem fazed by the big stage, either. The first two-goal game came in his return home to Ottawa last week -- where he played junior hockey -- and the second one came on national television as he handed the first-place Red Wings (17-5-3) only their second loss in regulation at home all season. Sunday's finish to the Chevron World Challenge was a fitting conclusion to the season for McDowell. An unknown player a year ago when he finished runner-up at this tournament, McDowell faced tremendous pressure as he tried to complete his comeback on Tiger Woods. With what felt like the entire world pulling for Tiger to get his first win in 2010, it was McDowell who reminded us what the old Tiger used to look like. He drained long birdie putts on 18 and the first playoff hole to slam the door on Tiger's worst season.

PGA Q-School
Five of the six rounds are complete and the 2011 class will be crowned Monday. Long-time PGA player Billy Mayfair finds himself tied in the lead at 16-under along with Ben Martin. The top 25 finishers and ties will earn their PGA Tour card for next season. The final round began with 26 players in position to qualify with another 24 within four strokes. As if nerves aren't enough to deal with, temperatures are in the 40s with 15 mph winds.

Lee Westwood
When Westwood unseated Tiger Woods as the World's No. 1 golfer, many people just shrugged it off and attributed it to Tiger's lack of play. Well Tiger came back and was determined to finish the year with a win. How did Westwood answer? He finished with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in three starts, including the HSBC Champions where he was 11 strokes better than Tiger. Westwood ended 2011 with an emphatic 8-stroke win at the Nedbank Golf Challenge this weekend and strengthened his hold on No. 1.

The commissioner met with with reporters in Palm Beach after the league's two-day Board of Governors meetings. Showing off league corporate partner Cisco's latest advancement in video conferencing, called "Telepresence," Bettman was also able to speak face-to-face via video monitors with writers in New York and Toronto.

As the league looks forward with its technology, it is not looking back on its decision to go to a shootout to determine the outcomes of games tied after 60 minutes of regulation and five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime.

Jacob Tamme Starting for Colts

Jacob Tamme will start at tight end Thursday for the Indianapolis Colts.

Tamme, questionable throughout the week with a knee injury, was made active shortly before the Colts' game against the Tennessee Titans, and will start a seventh consecutive game.

Also, wide receiver Kenny Britt is active for the Titans after missing the last four games with a hamstring injury.
